Assistant Design Engineer

Our client, Ringway, a trusted provider of highways services to the public sector, is seeking a Assistant Design Eningeer to join their team in Stevenage.

This is a fantastic opportunity to begin your career as an Assistant Design Engineer, supporting the delivery of highway maintenance and improvement schemes. You will gain hands-on experience across design, coordination, and project delivery, working alongside experienced professionals in a collaborative environment. From early planning through to construction and handover, you will play a valuable part in bringing projects to life while developing your technical knowledge and confidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and delivery of highway schemes from early stages to completion
  • Assist with preparing project programmes, progress updates, and cost forecasts
  • Contribute to the production of engineering designs, drawings, and technical documents
  • Help ensure designs meet relevant industry standards and local authority requirements
  • Support coordination of subcontractors, suppliers, and internal delivery teams
  • Assist with site setup planning, traffic management layouts, and safe working practices
  • Contribute to risk assessments, safety documentation, and compliance processes
  • Engage with stakeholders including clients, local authorities, and utility providers
  • Help monitor project costs, identify efficiencies, and support budget tracking
  • Take part in continuous improvement initiatives across design and delivery processes

Essential Skills and Requirements

  • Basic understanding of highway engineering, infrastructure, or project delivery
  • Knowledge of relevant standards such as DMRB, TSRGD, or CDM regulations
  • Ability to interpret technical information including drawings or utility plans
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical ideas clearly
  • Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively
  • A proactive approach with a willingness to learn and develop new skills
  • Attention to detail with a focus on quality and accuracy
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and standard Microsoft Office tools
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering or a related field
  • Full UK driving licence
