Buddhist Chaplain – HMP Peterborough

This is an excellent opportunity to join the Chaplaincy team at HMP Peterborough as a Buddhist Chaplain, providing spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and faith-based support to residents, staff, and their families.

The successful candidate will be a committed and practising Buddhist with a strong understanding of Buddhist teachings, philosophy, and rituals.You will play a vital role in supporting the spiritual well-being of those in custody, delivering compassionate pastoral care in line with PSI 51 on Pastoral Care.

You will be confident in communicating in English, have relevant experience within a faith or pastoral setting, and hold endorsement from the Prison Service Buddhist Faith Adviser (evidence required prior to appointment).

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide pastoral care, spiritual guidance, and faith-based support to prisoners, staff, and their families.

  • Lead worship, prayer sessions, study groups, and faith-specific programmes.

  • Support and mentor chaplains and volunteers, ensuring chaplaincy services are accessible at all times.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan religious events, maintain worship facilities, and manage faith materials.

  • Build and maintain links with local faith communities and contribute to staff faith awareness training.

  • Assist with policy development, data reporting, and continuous improvement of chaplaincy services.

The Ideal Candidate
  • A committed and practising Buddhist with a strong understanding of Buddhist teachings, philosophy, and rituals.

  • Experienced in providing pastoral care within a faith or community setting.

  • Endorsed by the Prison Service Buddhist Faith Adviser (evidence required prior to appointment).

  • Confident in communicating in English, delivering services and support with clarity and compassion.

  • Demonstrates empathy, integrity, and resilience, with a professional and caring approach.

  • Committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment while upholding high standards of service.

  • Successful candidates will need to complete Enhanced Level 2 & CTC checks (processed on-site).

Package
  • £2,988 (pro-rata)

  • Part-time: 5 hours per week
