The Opportunity
We're working with a respected public-sector organisation seeking an experienced Data Protection Officer (DPO) to lead and strengthen their data protection and information governance framework.
This is a key role where you'll act as the organisation's trusted advisor on all data protection matters-providing practical, hands-on guidance and ensuring compliance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
The Role
As the DPO, you'll play a central role in supporting the organisation to confidently manage data risks, make informed decisions, and maintain public trust.
You will:
- Advise on data protection queries, information disclosure, and ICO-related risks
- Provide clear guidance on what information can and cannot be shared
- Review and enhance existing data protection processes, identifying any gaps
- Support with information governance, including access to records, complaints, and contractual data matters
- Help shape the organisation's understanding of data protection workload and ongoing support needs
- Act as a key point of contact for regulators including the ICO
- Deliver pragmatic, easily understood advice to managers and internal teams
- Oversee Subject Access Requests (SARs) and data-related complaints
- Promote a strong culture of compliance, accountability, and good data practices
About You
We're looking for a confident, pragmatic specialist who can quickly assess current processes and provide hands-on support.
You'll ideally have:
- Experience as a Data Protection Officer or in a senior data protection / information governance role
- Strong working knowledge of UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018
- A recognised qualification (e.g. CIPP/E, CIPM, GDPR Practitioner, or equivalent)
- Proven ability to advise senior stakeholders and influence decision-making
- Experience dealing with ICO enquiries, compliance issues, and data breaches
- A practical, solutions-focused approach-not just theoretical knowledge
