About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an EC&I Designer to join a specialist engineering organisation delivering projects across the gas transmission, distribution, storage and process sectors.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will be responsible for producing high-quality Electrical, Control & Instrumentation design deliverables throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to installation and commissioning. The role supports the design, modification, maintenance and upgrade of critical gas infrastructure and offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects within a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design Activities
- Develop EC&I design documentation from concept through to detailed design and commissioning stages.
- Produce a range of electrical and instrumentation design deliverables, including:
- Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Cable Block Diagrams
- Cable Schedules
- Instrument Loop Diagrams
- Instrument Hook-Ups
- Junction Box Schedules
- Control Panel Layouts
- Marshalling Cabinet Layouts
- Earthing & Lightning Protection Drawings
- Hazardous Area Layouts
- Prepare and update P&IDs with EC&I design inputs.
- Develop instrument indexes and equipment schedules.
- Produce control system architecture drawings.
- Generate cable routing and containment layouts.
- Support the development of Functional Design Specifications (FDS), cause and effect matrices, and control philosophies.
- Assist EC&I Engineers with detailed design calculations and equipment selection.
- Review vendor documentation and integrate vendor package interfaces into project designs.
- Support procurement activities through the preparation of technical requisitions and design documentation.
- Participate in design reviews, safety studies, constructability reviews and technical workshops.
- Provide technical clarification and support during fabrication, installation and commissioning activities.
- Liaise with engineers, suppliers, contractors and site teams to ensure project requirements are achieved.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant legislation, industry standards, client requirements and company procedures.
- Support compliance with hazardous area and functional safety requirements.
- Promote safe design principles throughout project delivery.
- Contribute to design assurance and technical governance activities.
- Support Management of Change (MoC) processes where required.
- Maintain drawing registers and document control requirements.
- Ensure design deliverables are issued in accordance with project schedules.
- Conduct self-checking and peer reviews of design documentation.
- Support quality assurance processes and project audits.
- Ensure all documentation is accurate, complete and compliant with project requirements.
- HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Engineering Design, or a related discipline.
- Proven EC&I design experience within the gas industry.
- Experience producing EC&I design deliverables for industrial projects.
- Knowledge of gas processing, transmission, distribution, storage or associated infrastructure facilities.
- Experience with hazardous area installations and associated design requirements.
- Strong understanding of instrumentation systems, control systems and electrical distribution systems.
- Experience interpreting P&IDs, engineering specifications and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with the engineering lifecycle from FEED through detailed design and commissioning.
- Ability to develop detailed Functional Design Specifications (FDS).
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.
- Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Degree qualification in Electrical, Control or Instrumentation Engineering.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution.
- COMPEX awareness or certification.
- Functional Safety awareness training.
- Experience with gas transmission networks, compressor stations, pressure reduction stations, LNG, biomethane, hydrogen blending or gas storage facilities.
- Experience within regulated utility environments.
- Familiarity with EPLAN and/or AVEVA Electrical & Instrumentation software.
- Knowledge of PLC, SCADA and functional safety systems.
- Understanding of ATEX/DSEAR requirements, IEC 60079 and IEC 61511 standards.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
