About the Role
Our client a local government authority is seeking a motivated and professional Environmental Health Officer (EHO) to join our Environmental Health and Public Protection team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the health, safety, and wellbeing of our communities through proactive regulation, enforcement, and partnership working.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering statutory environmental health functions, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, and supporting the Council’s commitment to creating safe, healthy, and sustainable neighbourhoods.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out inspections and investigations relating to: Food safety and hygiene, Health and safety, Private sector housing standards, Noise nuisance and environmental protection and Public health matters.
- Enforce environmental health legislation in accordance with Council policies and statutory requirements.
- Investigate complaints from residents, businesses, and stakeholders regarding environmental and public health issues.
- Prepare evidence, reports, notices, and legal documentation for enforcement action where necessary.
- Provide professional advice and guidance to businesses, residents, and internal departments.
- Conduct risk assessments and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Respond to emergency incidents and participate in out-of-hours duties where required.
- Maintain accurate records and case management documentation.
- Work collaboratively with external agencies, partner organisations, and community stakeholders.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Degree or diploma in Environmental Health recognised by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
- Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) registration or equivalent professional qualification.
- Demonstrable experience in environmental health enforcement and regulatory services.
- Strong knowledge of UK environmental health legislation and local authority procedures.
- Ability to manage a varied caseload and prioritise workloads effectively.
- Competent in report writing, evidence gathering, and legal processes.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and case management systems.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (or ability to travel across the borough as required).
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working within a local authority environment.
- Additional qualifications in housing, food safety, or health and safety.
- Experience attending court proceedings and presenting evidence.
- Knowledge of contaminated land, licensing, or pollution control functions.
