An established and growing building services contractor is looking to appoint an experienced Financial Controller to support the Finance Director and lead the day-to-day finance function within a fast-paced, project-led environment.

This is a hands-on role within an owner-managed business, suited to someone who understands the operational and commercial realities of construction and engineering projects, and can work closely with project, commercial and senior leadership teams.

The business delivers mechanical, electrical and engineering projects across commercial and specialist environments and is looking for someone seeking a long-term permanent opportunity within a growing organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the finance function on a day-to-day basis
  • Production of monthly management accounts, board packs and financial reporting
  • Cashflow forecasting, budgeting and financial planning
  • Oversee WIP reporting, cost-to-complete forecasting and project profitability
  • Management of applications, certifications, retentions and subcontractor payments
  • CIS and reverse-charge VAT compliance
  • Work closely with Commercial Managers and operational teams to improve financial visibility across projects
  • Management and development of finance staff
  • Improve controls, reporting processes and operational finance procedures
  • Support the Finance Director with strategic and commercial decision making

Candidate Requirements

  • Fully qualified or strong part-qualified accountant (ACCA / CIMA / ACA preferred)
  • Previous experience within construction, building services, engineering consultancy or contractor environment is essential
  • Strong understanding of project accounting, including WIP, applications, certifications, retentions and cost-to-complete reporting
  • Hands-on experience with CIS, subcontractor payments and reverse-charge VAT
  • Experience operating within an owner-managed or organically grown business
  • Previous management of finance teams
  • Strong systems and Excel capability — exposure to Coins, 4PS, Business Central, Sage, Oracle, SAP or MS Dynamics advantageous
  • Commercially aware, detail-oriented and operationally minded
