• Fire extinguisher maintenance qualification is desirable but not essential
Role Overview
My Client is seeking an experienced Fire Alarm & Life Safety Engineer to join their growing technical team.
This is a service-led role covering fire alarm systems, smoke ventilation (AOV), emergency lighting, with opportunities to support larger installation projects alongside our install team. You will be trusted to work independently, diagnose faults correctly, and carry out remedial works to a high standard across commercial and residential sites.
This role is not suitable for trainees or improvers. We are looking for a competent, experienced engineer who takes pride in doing the job properly.
Key Responsibilities
Fire Alarm Systems
• Service, maintain, fault-find, and repair addressable and conventional fire alarm systems
• Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive call-outs
• Accurately diagnose faults and implement permanent corrective solutions
• Carry out remedial works including device replacement, minor system modifications, and repairs
• Complete clear, professional digital reports
• Participate in a shared on-call rota
Smoke Ventilation (AOV)
• Inspect, test, and maintain AOV and smoke ventilation systems
• Test actuators, detectors, fireman’s switches, interfaces, and control panels
• Identify faults and carry out or recommend remedial works
Emergency Lighting
• Carry out monthly and annual testing in accordance with BS 5266-1
• Identify failures and carry out remedial works including battery and luminaire replacement
• Ensure accurate digital test records are maintained
Fire Extinguishers (Desirable)
• Service and maintain portable fire extinguishers to BS 5306
• Advise clients on correct extinguisher provision and placement
(Training can be provided if required)
Installation Support
• Work alongside the installation team on larger fire alarm and life safety projects where required
• Assist with system upgrades, commissioning, and final testing
Reporting & Systems
• You will be provided with a company mobile phone and laptop
• All works must be recorded using the company’s service management software
• Reports must be completed accurately, clearly, and to a high professional standard
• Documentation must be suitable for client review, compliance records, and audit purposes
What Success Looks Like
Within the first 6–12 months you will:
• Manage service and maintenance visits independently
• Diagnose faults methodically — not guesswork
• Carry out remedial works confidently and competently
• Produce clear, professional reports clients can rely on
• Represent the company positively on site and with clients
Requirements & Qualifications
Experience
• Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in the fire safety industry
• Proven background in service, maintenance, fault-finding, and remedial works
Technical Experience
• Addressable and conventional fire alarm systems
• Experience with major manufacturers such as Kentec, Advanced, Morley, and C-TEC
• Wireless fire alarm systems experience essential (EMS, Hyfire, EDA, Apollo)
Qualifications
• FIA Units (or equivalent) in Fire Alarm Maintenance and/or Commissioning
• Electrical qualification desirable but not essential
Knowledge
• Strong working knowledge of BS 5839-1, BS 5266-1, and BS 5306
Other
• Confident working independently from day one
• Comfortable using mobile devices, laptops, and digital reporting systems
• Clear, professional communication skills
