Graduate Mechancial Engineer

Graduate / Junior Mechanical Engineer (Building Services)
Birmingham Hybrid (min. 3 days in office)
£30,000 + performance bonus
The Role
This is a rare opportunity to join a specialist consultancy that does something genuinely different. Rather than placing graduates on large teams where they spend years supporting senior engineers on a narrow slice of work, this practice takes people on from the start, teaches them heat pump design from first principles, and expects them to be leading their own projects within a couple of years.
The team works exclusively in the design of low-carbon heating and cooling systems - ground source, air source, and water source heat pumps - from early feasibility through to Stage 4 detailed design. Clients include local authorities, universities, and main contractors. The work is technical, design-led, and hands-on throughout the project lifecycle.
As a Graduate or Junior Mechanical Engineer, you'll be contributing from day one: producing feasibility reports, developing CAD models in Autodesk software, attending site visits, processing and analysing data, and supporting the development of internal calculation tools. There's also a growing need for Revit support as the team builds out its BIM capability, and engineers are currently getting up to speed with IES, so there's real scope to develop in both areas.
About You
You'll have an MEng in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (minimum 2:1) and the technical writing ability to produce clear, structured reports. Strong Excel skills and working knowledge of CAD are essential. Beyond the academic baseline, what the team really looks for is someone who's curious, takes ownership of their work, and has something a bit different about them, some evidence of hands-on problem-solving, practical curiosity, or a project outside of university that shows initiative. If you've worked on something mechanical, built something, or taken on a technical challenge beyond your course, that's the kind of thing that stands out here.
You should be comfortable managing multiple workstreams, motivated to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment, and genuinely interested in the energy transition and the built environment.
The Business
Founded in 2020, this consultancy has grown consistently year on year and now has a team of twelve, the majority of whom are design engineers. The founding team brings over 85 years of combined thermal engineering experience, including more than two decades designing and delivering the UK's largest heat pump contractor portfolio, not just design, but installation, commissioning, optimisation, and fault-finding. That depth of operational knowledge feeds directly into how the team designs.
It's a genuinely diverse, collaborative environment, multicultural, with a flat structure and a culture where junior engineers are expected to contribute ideas to wider business discussions, not just technical work.
