An established engineering and mechanical services business is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to support operations across workshop, fabrication, and site environments based in Essex.

This role will play a key part in maintaining and improving health & safety standards across the business, ensuring compliance with current legislation, industry best practice, and internal management systems. The successful candidate will work closely with operational teams to promote a proactive safety culture and ensure risks are effectively identified, managed, and controlled.

The position would suit an individual with practical experience within construction, fabrication, mechanical engineering, or industrial environments who is confident providing hands-on support across both workshop and site activities.

Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety Support
- Promote a positive and proactive health & safety culture across all operational areas.
- Support compliance with relevant health & safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act and CDM Regulations.
- Assist with the implementation and ongoing development of health & safety policies, procedures, and management systems.
- Provide practical guidance and support to managers, supervisors, and operational teams.
- Help identify workplace hazards and ensure suitable control measures are implemented.

Workshop & Operational Safety
- Support safe working practices within workshop and fabrication environments.
- Monitor activities including:
o Fabrication and welding operations
o Mechanical assembly work
o Use of lifting equipment and cranes
o Plant and machinery operations
o Manual handling
o Material storage and movement
- Carry out regular inspections and safety audits within workshop facilities.
- Support supervisors in managing operational risks and maintaining safe systems of work.

Risk Assessments & RAMS
- Assist with the preparation and review of:
o Risk Assessments
o Method Statements
o Safe Systems of Work
- Ensure RAMS are practical, compliant, and clearly communicated to the workforce.
- Monitor site and workshop activities to ensure compliance with approved RAMS.

Inspections, Audits & Compliance
- Conduct regular workplace inspections across workshops and project sites.
- Identify hazards, unsafe practices, and opportunities for improvement.
- Prepare reports and support the implementation of corrective actions.
- Assist with internal and external audits.
- Maintain accurate health & safety documentation and records.

Incident Investigation
- Support the reporting and investigation of accidents, incidents, and near misses.
- Assist with root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with relevant reporting requirements including RIDDOR where applicable.

Training & Safety Awareness
- Support delivery of health & safety inductions and toolbox talks.
- Promote workforce engagement in safety initiatives and campaigns.
- Identify training requirements and support ongoing safety development across teams.

Contractor & Supply Chain Management
- Assist in monitoring subcontractor safety performance.
- Review subcontractor RAMS and associated safety documentation.
- Promote consistent safety standards across all operational activities.

Continuous Improvement
- Support the ongoing development of health & safety systems and procedures.
- Contribute to improvement initiatives and wider SHEQ objectives.
- Provide feedback on trends, risks, and opportunities to improve safety performance.
