Junior Electrical Engineer

Junior Electrical Engineer to work on the transition of vehicles from traditional relay-based electrical architectures to advanced, integrated electronic control systems. You will focus on developing, testing, and implementing modern electronics solutions, including ECU-controlled systems, solid-state switching, and CAN-based communication networks, along with ownership of whole vehicle schematic and harness design. As Electrical Engineer, you will work closely with mechanical, quality, and manufacturing teams to ensure new systems are reliable, manufacturable, and compliant with relevant standards, while maintaining our client’s reputation for robustness and simplicity.

Junior Electrical Engineer Role:

Technical Contribution
The role involves replacing traditional relay logic with control modules and programmable ECU-based architecture, developing electrical and electronic system designs including schematic creation, PCB layout, and harness design. It also includes implementing and optimising CAN Bus communication for vehicle systems integration, defining system architecture for integrating sensors, actuators, and control units, and EMC compliance testing to ensure adherence to regulations. The engineer will prototype and validate new electronic systems to ensure reliability under harsh off-highway operating conditions and create wiring harnesses optimised for reduced complexity, weight, and improved diagnostics.

Cross-Functional Coordination
Collaborate with production and quality teams to ensure electronic systems are manufacturable and meet durability standards. Work closely with service teams to develop diagnostic tools and maintenance procedures for electronic systems. Liaise with suppliers to source, test, and integrate advanced electronics components.

Communication
Provide clear updates on system design progress, risks, and solutions to project leaders. Present concepts and validation results at design reviews, explaining system architecture and benefits over relay-based designs.

Documentation and Change Control
Maintain detailed schematics, PCB layouts, and ECU configuration records. Manage design changes through the ECN process to ensure accuracy and traceability.

Continuous Improvement
Identify opportunities to enhance vehicle performance, serviceability, and reliability. Integrate diagnostic capability into vehicle systems to support predictive maintenance and reduce downtime.

Independence
Lead the electronics modernisation of Thwaites’ vehicle range, ensuring project delivery on time, within budget, and to required quality standards. Select optimal architecture, components, and software strategies for vehicle systems.

Negotiating Field
Engineering Team – Work closely on integration with mechanical and hydraulic systems.
Production & Quality – Ensure manufacturability, durability, and compliance.
Suppliers – Source and qualify electronics hardware and software solutions.

Junior Electrical Engineer Requirements:

Ideally looking for a graduate engineer with some experience. Recent graduates considered if they possess some of the above experience.

Essential
Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
Capable of transitioning mechanical/electrical relay systems to electronic control architectures.
Proficiency in schematic capture, PCB layout, and wiring harness design.
Knowledge of CAN Bus communication and ECU programming.
Experience in EMC compliance and testing.
Strong diagnostic, fault-finding, and problem-solving skills.

Desirable
Experience in off-highway, construction, or agricultural vehicle electronics is beneficial.
Understanding of functional safety principles.
Experience with VeSys or Capital Design software or similar.
Familiarity with embedded software development.
