KS1 Functional Skills Tutor Required – Experience Supporting ASD learners
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced teacher/tutor to provide Functional Skills support for Key Stage 1 pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The successful tutor will deliver structured, supportive lessons that promote confidence, engagement, and progress in early literacy and numeracy.
This role requires a patient, adaptable professional who understands the learning needs of children with ASD and can provide a calm, consistent learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver individualised tutoring sessions tailored to the pupils’ learning profiles
- Support the development of early literacy skills, including phonics, reading, and writing
- Support early numeracy skills, including number recognition, counting, and basic maths concepts
- Use structured, engaging, and ASD-friendly teaching strategies
- Adapt teaching approaches to suit the pupils’ communication style, sensory needs, and pace of learning
- Build a positive and trusting relationship with the children to encourage engagement and confidence
- Provide brief feedback and progress updates where required
Essential Requirements:
- Experience supporting children in Key Stage 1 (ages 5–7)
- Demonstrable experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Knowledge of early years / KS1 literacy and numeracy development
- A patient, empathetic, and flexible approach to teaching
- Ability to deliver lessons that are structured, engaging, and differentiated
Desirable:
- Teaching qualification or tutoring experience
- Experience using visual supports, structured learning approaches, or autism-friendly strategies
- Background in SEN education or specialist support
Session Details:
- Small group tutoring sessions
- Session schedule and duration to be agreed
