The Food Laboratory Assistant supports the safety and quality of food products. This role performs routine microbiological, chemical, and physical testing on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished goods to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and retailer standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform chemical testing
  • Prepare samples for analysis
  • Carry out routine laboratory analysis on malt samples
  • Conduct physical inspections Assist with sensory evaluation
  • Perform analytical testing for key parameters including moisture etc..
  • Isolate and report out-of-specification results to production teams immediately to halt unsafe batches.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as extract apparatus
  • Accurately record analytical results and ensure full traceability of laboratory data

Laboratory Hygiene & Compliance

Maintain sterile conditions by cleaning work surfaces, autoclaving media, and washing lab glassware.

Calibrate plant and lab instruments

Manage chemical and media inventory, tracking expiry dates to ensure testing accuracy.

Traceability & Records

Log testing data accurately into the Laboratory Information Management System.

Maintain batch traceability records to ensure swift action during product audits.

Education & Experience

Required: GCSEs (or equivalent) in Science, English, and Maths.

Preferred: A-Level Chemistry/Biology, BTEC in Applied Science, or a Food Science degree.

Clear communication: Confidence to report food safety issues directly to factory line managers.

Numeracy: Good math skills for calculating data factors and recording percentages.

Exceptional attention to detail.

A strong commitment to accuracy and precision, particularly in data collection and reporting.

The ability to follow laboratory protocols and procedures consistently and accurately.

Previous experience working in a laboratory environment, ideally within food laboratories or similar.
