Senior Production Engineer Overview:
- Own core production documentation, PFMEAs and standard work to stabilise output
- Design jigs, fixtures and tooling in SolidWorks to improve repeatability and ergonomics
- Lead lean and CI activity to cut waste, downtime and variability across assembly
- Troubleshoot process and equipment issues to protect output, quality and delivery
- Improve routings, time studies and capacity, supporting ERP accuracy and investment cases
This Senior Production Engineer role reports to the Production Engineering Manager and sits within a high-mix, low-to-medium volume manufacturing environment. The Senior Production Engineer will strengthen process control and documentation, design practical tooling and fixtures, and drive measurable improvements across safety, quality, throughput and cost. This Senior Production Engineer position is hands-on, working closely with production teams and cross-functional stakeholders to improve manufacturability, remove bottlenecks, and standardise processes, with scope to support automation and new technology adoption where it adds value.
Day-to-day responsibilities of a Senior Production Engineer
- Build and maintain production documentation (work instructions, process flows, setup sheets, PFMEAs, TPM schedules)
- Design and introduce jigs, fixtures and tooling using SolidWorks to improve efficiency and consistency
- Improve line layouts and workflow using AutoCAD to reduce waste and optimise space
- Lead lean / Six Sigma style improvements and embed standardisation across processes
- Use SPC thinking to understand capability and reduce variation where it matters most
- Provide technical support on the shop floor, troubleshooting issues to minimise downtime
- Support training and consistency by developing and coaching production trainers
- Run process audits and assessments to maintain internal compliance and external requirements
- Support quality, cost and manufacturability improvements with Engineering, Quality and Operations
- Develop test equipment and validation approaches to confirm performance against spec
- Drive process standardisation and automation projects to improve throughput and repeatability
- Identify bottlenecks and implement practical fixes to improve capacity and utilisation
- Complete time studies and cost estimates, updating ERP routings to reflect real performance
- Support capital equipment selection and justification, including ROI, specification and implementation
- Maintain strong HSE discipline, identifying risks early and embedding safe working practices
What they’re looking for - Senior Production Engineer
- Proven background as a Senior Production Engineer, Production Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer or Mechanical Engineer in a high-mix manufacturing environment
- HND (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Industrial or Production Engineering
- Strong process improvement mindset with lean and CI experience
- Confident using 3D CAD (SolidWorks) for tooling/fixture design and technical drawings
- Comfortable working with ERP/MRP (Priority exposure useful) for BOMs, routings and work order planning
- Able to raise and drive engineering changes to improve quality and efficiency
- Strong problem-solving, structured communication and the ability to influence across teams
Desirable - Senior Production Engineer
- Electro-mechanical assembly experience and broader manufacturing knowledge (gears, castings, injection moulding)
- Test/DAQ exposure (LabVIEW/NI beneficial)
- Flowline manufacturing exposure
- Rapid prototyping / additive methods used for fixtures or development work
- Six Sigma Green Belt (or higher)
