Linux Systems Administrator

We are looking for an experienced and self-sufficient Senior Linux Systems Administrator to join our client's team in Hull. This is a hands-on senior role suited to someone who thrives in autonomous working environments, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, and is confident managing critical Linux infrastructure with minimal supervision.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day administration, support, maintenance, and ongoing development of the company’s IT infrastructure and systems. The position combines traditional Linux systems administration with broader infrastructure, cloud, networking, security, and user support responsibilities.

The role is primarily based in Hull, with occasional travel to other UK sites as required.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure & Systems Administration

  • Administration and support of Linux server environments
  • Management of virtualised and cloud-based infrastructure
  • Maintaining servers, networking, VPNs, firewalls, Wi-Fi, and related infrastructure
  • Managing cloud platforms and SaaS systems including Microsoft 365 and Azure
  • Monitoring system performance, availability, backups, and disaster recovery
  • Managing patching, endpoint security, antivirus, and access controls

User & Operational Support

  • Providing first- and second-line support for hardware, software, and networking issues
  • Managing onboarding and offboarding processes for staff
  • Provisioning laptops, devices, accounts, and software access
  • Supporting users across multiple sites when required

Automation, Improvement & Projects

  • Automating systems administration and deployment tasks where possible
  • Identifying opportunities for process and infrastructure improvements
  • Leading infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and IT improvement projects
  • Supporting compliance, security best practices, and audit readiness

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Extensive Linux systems administration experience
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure, networking, and systems operations
  • Experience with VMware or similar virtualisation platforms
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, firewalls, and networking fundamentals, Microsoft 365 and Azure administration, Cloud infrastructure and SaaS platforms
  • Backup, monitoring, and endpoint management solutions
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively
  • Full UK driving licence and own transport

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with scripting or automation (Bash, Python, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Cyber Essentials or security compliance experience
  • Familiarity with ITIL principles or ticketing systems
  • Experience with VoIP systems or conferencing technologies
  • Knowledge of GDPR and IT compliance standards
