Shift Pattern: Rotating Day Shifts

  • Week 1: 06:00 – 15:15 Monday to Thursday, 06:00 – 14:15 Friday

  • Week 2: 12:45 – 22:00 Monday to Thursday, 13:45 – 22:00 Friday

About the Role

We are seeking a proactive and skilled Multi-Skilled Shift Technician to join our Engineering team at our Hitchin manufacturing facility. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced maintenance engineer who enjoys working in a fast-paced production environment and takes pride in keeping equipment operating safely and efficiently.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in minimising production downtime through effective maintenance, fault finding, repair and continuous improvement of plant and machinery. You will work across both mechanical and electrical disciplines, carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), responding to breakdowns, and supporting operational teams to maximise equipment reliability and performance.

Key Responsibilities

As a Shift Technician, your responsibilities will include:

  • Diagnosing and resolving mechanical and electrical faults in a logical and efficient manner.

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities to minimise equipment failures.

  • Responding quickly and effectively to production breakdowns to reduce downtime.

  • Completing maintenance work orders and repairs to a high standard and within agreed timescales.

  • Assisting with equipment installations, modifications and improvement projects.

  • Supporting contractors and other engineers during maintenance and installation activities.

  • Working across all site areas and equipment, undertaking both mechanical and electrical maintenance within your skills and competency.

  • Maintaining excellent housekeeping standards within workshops and plant areas.

  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance plant reliability, efficiency and performance.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for a motivated and adaptable engineer who thrives in a manufacturing environment and is committed to delivering high standards of maintenance and engineering support.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience working within a multi-skilled engineering team in a manufacturing environment.

  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.

  • Mechanical Engineering qualification (NVQ/C&G Level 2 or above) or completed apprenticeship OR

  • Electrical Engineering qualification (City & Guilds 236 or equivalent) or completed apprenticeship.

  • Demonstrable experience in maintenance and repair of industrial plant and equipment.

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical and/or electrical drawings.

  • Computer literacy with experience using CMMS or engineering asset management systems.

  • Ability to work at height and within confined spaces where required.

Mechanical Experience 

We are particularly interested in candidates with:

  • Strong mechanical fitting experience.

  • Pneumatic systems knowledge and fault-finding ability.

  • Experience working on conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, motors and production machinery.

  • Fabrication and welding experience (desirable).

Electrical Experience

We are particularly interested in candidates with:

  • Strong electrical installation and fault-finding skills.

  • Experience reading electrical schematics.

  • Panel wiring experience.

  • BTEC ONC/HNC in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.

  • City & Guilds 2382 (18th Edition preferred).

  • Experience with variable speed drives, motors and control systems.
