Mechanical Design Engineer
Hartlepool

Overview
Wolviston Management Services is delighted to be working with our amazing client to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their established engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the design and supporting programmes from initial concept through to full-scale production across telecoms, aerospace, defence and space sectors.
The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will provide end-to-end engineering support across, modules and amplifiers. The role demands a strong focus on mechanical integrity, thermal performance, reliability and manufacturability within high-specification environments.
You will play a key role in delivering robust, lightweight and thermally efficient designs suitable for demanding industrial and high-reliability applications.
Key Responsibilities Mechanical Design & Development
  • Design precision components and assemblies including enclosures, heatsinks, liquid-cooled systems and waveguide structures
  • Develop modular architectures for integration into larger system-level assemblies
  • Ensure compliance with RF, thermal, environmental and mechanical performance requirements
  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings (SolidWorks)
  • Define materials, finishes and manufacturing processes aligned to performance and cost targets
Analysis & Validation
  • Undertake thermal analysis including CFD to validate cooling strategies
  • Perform structural and dynamic analysis (FEA) covering vibration, shock and fatigue
  • Validate analytical models through testing and data correlation
RF-Aware Engineering
  • Collaborate with RF and electronics teams to optimise mechanical impact on RF performance
  • Support design of waveguides, precision features and PCB-integrated assemblies
  • Contribute to electromechanical concept development
Manufacturing & Delivery
  • Design for manufacture, assembly and cost efficiency across CNC machining, casting, additive and sheet metal processes
  • Produce engineering documentation including BOMs, GD&T drawings and assembly instructions
  • Support prototype builds, first article inspection and production introduction
  • Participate in design reviews and change control processes (ECN/ECO)
Prototyping & Testing
  • Support build and validation of development hardware
  • Assist with environmental and reliability testing (thermal, vibration, humidity, shock)
  • Contribute to development of production tooling, jigs and fixtures
Requirements Essential
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong 2D/3D CAD capability (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience designing high-precision assemblies in demanding environments
  • Knowledge of PCB integration, RF shielding and EMI/EMC considerations
  • Good understanding of materials, manufacturing processes and GD&T
  • Experience producing detailed engineering drawings
  • Strong team collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills
Desirable
  • Experience in aerospace, defence, telecoms or space-related programmes
  • Familiarity with RF/mmWave systems and high-frequency product design
  • Experience with FEA and thermal simulation (e.g. SolidWorks Simulation/Flow)
  • Knowledge of lightweighting and structural optimisation techniques
  • Exposure to high-reliability standards (MIL-STD, ECSS)
  • Experience with environmental testing and qualification processes
  • Understanding of RoHS/WEEE compliance
Personal Attributes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Detail-oriented with a proactive, hands-on approach
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and deliver to deadlines
  • Effective communicator across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
  • Self-motivated and committed to continuous development
