Main Tasks & Responsibilities:
Broad Description
Assist mechanical engineers and maintenance technicians with servicing, repairs, and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) tasks to reduce equipment downtime.
Learn to diagnose and repair mechanical faults on production and facility equipment.
Support the installation, testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems and machinery.
Inspect mechanical components for wear, damage, and operational issues.
Assist with dismantling, repairing, and reassembling pumps, motors, conveyors, gearboxes, valves, and other mechanical equipment.
Use hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and workshop equipment safely and effectively.
Lubricate machinery and replace worn parts in line with maintenance schedules.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, manuals, and technical instructions.
Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection records, and repair documentation.
Work alongside production and engineering teams to minimise machinery downtime.
Follow all health & safety procedures, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
Ensure work areas are kept clean, organised, and compliant with safety standards.
Participate in apprenticeship training, technical coursework, and on-the-job learning.
Develop knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, bearings, drives, and mechanical systems.
Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability and efficiency.
Respond to mechanical breakdowns and assist with emergency repairs when required.
Duties
Receives instructions from their Mentor to direct them in the completion of tasks in a timely and Safe manner.
To become proficient in planned maintenance tasks, fault finding, and electrical breakdown repair.
Understand and demonstrate hands on and analytical skills to assists the business in the electrical maintenance tasks.
Carry out such tasks as Installations, design and manufacturing of control panels, fault finding and planned maintenance.
To assist with repairs, planned maintenance and project work.
Work with supervision on allotted tasks within nationally recognised regulations and company procedures, eg.I.E.E. Regulations.
Keep areas of work in a clean and tidy condition.
Ensure safe working practices are understood and adhered to.
To ensure that logs are kept of planned maintenance activities, and that job cards are completed as appropriate, and the CMMS system is kept up to date with the planned maintenance tasks.
Documentation Requirements
Assist in the Collection of engineering data related to Maintenance Duties and Responsibilities.
Use of the CMMS system to pan the maintenance activities and produce accurately generated work records.
Completion of Apprentice Logbook in association with the NVQ3.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Adhere to all applicable HSE regulations, BAL safety policies and procedures.
- Report all incidents, near misses and accidents through the company reporting tool and to your immediate line manager without undue delay. Where required to do so, assist with the timely investigation and actions thereafter.
- Where required to do so, provide information to assist in incident investigations. Understand that CCTV may be used in an incident investigation and could be used as evidence in further disciplinary proceedings.
- Do not undertake any task that you have not received training or instruction on (practical or formal) and report this to your immediate line manager without delay.
- Where required to do so, Issue and manage works permits according to company or departmental procedures.
- Any employee with personnel responsibilities, must review their area of responsibility risk assessments, training, and competency requirements to ensure all significant risks are recognised with a suitable hierarchy of control to mitigate the risk.
- Where you are responsible for a visitor or contractor attending site to ensure they are suitably inducted and booked into the attendance system prior to their arrival.
- Familiarise yourself with your department rules and safety documentation, their location and raise any discrepancy to your immediate line manager.
- Personnel who are responsible for contractors on site, shall adhere to the BAL supplier prequalification requirements and manage their contractors on site.

Qualifications
Essential to the role
- GCSE Grades at C or above for Mathematics, English and Information Technology.
Minimum requirement on completion of apprenticeship
- PEO’s (Performance engineering objectives).
- NVQ3 in electrical engineering.
- L3 academic qualification in electrical engineering.
Skills
- Strong interest in mechanical engineering and maintenance.
- Good practical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with tools and mechanical equipment safely.
- Willingness to learn technical processes and procedures.

Working Hours:
1st year - Full Time Placement at Shrewsbury College
2nd - Final Year - Onsite Mon - Fri 40hours including 1 day per week college placement
