Mechanical & Piping Design Manager – Staff - Renewable Energy – Salary + Benefits – East Riding of Yorkshire

Our client are seeking an experienced and motivated Design Manager to join their Engineering and Operations team. This role requires strong expertise in energy systems, renewable technologies, and project management, with responsibility for leading the design and delivery of complex energy projects from concept through to commissioning and handover.

The successful candidate will have experience in commercial and industrial energy projects, particularly within heat sectors. They will be responsible for developing innovative, compliant, and cost-effective renewable energy solutions while ensuring successful project execution, client satisfaction, and continuous improvement across design and operational functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop efficient and effective commercial energy system designs tailored to site-specific requirements and client objectives, with a focus on renewable technologies and energy optimisation.
  • Produce designs for new and existing commercial and industrial projects within the district and process heat sectors.
  • Conduct detailed pre-installation surveys, site assessments, and heat loss calculations to inform system design and ensure optimal system performance.
  • Prepare technical documentation, specifications, drawings, and tender packages to support project delivery.
  • Utilise design software including AutoCAD, Inventor, Navisworks, and other relevant engineering tools to produce high-quality engineering outputs.
  • Support the integration of renewable technologies including heat pumps, solar PV, battery storage systems, and EV charging infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain design processes and procedures in line with ISO standards and quality management requirements.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant UK regulations, industry standards, and best practice guidelines.
  • Lead the full lifecycle of renewable energy projects from feasibility studies and concept design through installation, commissioning, and ongoing support.
  • Attend client meetings and site visits, providing technical expertise throughout project development and delivery.
  • Oversee and undertake commissioning activities to ensure systems operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with design specifications and contractual requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, contractors, suppliers, and clients to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction, efficiency improvements, and value engineering throughout project execution.

Qualification & Experience:

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Environmental Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proven experience in the design, management, commissioning, and servicing of renewable energy systems.
  • Strong understanding of renewable technologies including heat pumps and energy optimisation systems.
  • Experience conducting pre-installation surveys and technical site assessments.
  • Knowledge of piping systems and associated engineering principles.
  • Proficiency with engineering design software such as AutoCAD, Inventor, and Navisworks.
  • Strong project management, organisational, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
  • Knowledge of UK building regulations, industry standards, and health and safety requirements.

Desirable

  • Knowledge and practical experience of electrical systems and the integration of solar PV, battery storage, and EV charging technologies.
  • Professional project management qualifications.
  • Experience working within ISO-certified management systems.
  • Experience identifying and implementing operational efficiencies and cost-saving initiatives.
