Principal Design Engineer

Southampton (Hybrid)

Fast‑growing clean‑tech maritime business developing wind‑assisted propulsion systems is seeking a hands‑on Principal Design Engineer to lead structural/mechanical design of major subsystems.

You’ll own 3D/parametric modelling, structural analysis, and class‑compliant design, taking concepts through to production‑ready hardware with real‑world feedback.

ABOUT YOU

  • Degree in Mechanical / Structural / Marine / Naval Architecture

  • 5–10 years designing marine/offshore structures

  • Strong 3D CAD & parametric modelling (NX, Inventor, similar)

  • Structural analysis: FEA + hand calcs

  • Experience with DNV / Lloyd’s Register / NK

  • Background in large steel structures / welded assemblies

  • Ability to turn load cases → validated designs

  • Comfortable in a fast‑paced, hardware‑focused environment

YOUR NEW ROLE

  • Lead mechanical/structural design of key subsystems

  • Develop wing geometry & structural philosophy

  • Define load cases and ensure classification compliance

  • Perform/oversee stress & fatigue analysis

  • Engage directly with class societies

  • Mentor junior engineers
