Process Safety Engineer

Matchtech

This is an opportunity for a Process Safety Engineer to join a Joint Venture PMT during the pre-FEED of a $ multi-billion project. You will provide authoritative process safety input to shape safe, operable and cost-effective design, ensuring risk is fully understood and embedded in early project decisions.

Role Purpose

Lead the application of process safety engineering across the project, influencing design, managing risk, and ensuring compliance with company and regulatory standards. This role combines technical depth with strong stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Process Safety Engineering Leadership

  • Act as Client authority for process safety, guiding inherently safe design
  • Provide risk-based input to Project Management decision-making
  • Assess complex safety issues and communicate implications clearly

Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment

  • Lead and participate in HAZOP, PHA and other risk studies
  • Perform and review consequence analysis (dispersion, fire, explosion)
  • Apply techniques such as QRA, fault tree analysis and hazard identification

Design Assurance

  • Review contractor and licensor designs for compliance and best practice
  • Ensure effective design of SIS, relief systems, and fire protection
  • Contribute to safety philosophies, specifications and standards

Standards & Governance

  • Develop and own process safety standards and procedures
  • Evaluate deviations and provide risk-based recommendations
  • Ensure consistent application of safety requirements

Contractor Oversight

  • Review deliverables and resolve safety-related design issues
  • Ensure risks are clearly identified and reflected in design decisions

Technology & Assurance

  • Assess risks of new technologies and support qualification processes
  • Deliver surveillance activities and define equipment criticality

Experience & Technical Profile

Core Expertise

  • Demonstrable process safety engineering experience in refining, petrochemical or chemical sectors
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Hazard identification and risk assessment
    • Consequence modelling and dispersion analysis
    • Fire, explosion, and blast analysis
    • Relief systems and SIS design

Industry Experience

Background in major downstream or chemical process units preferably with one or more of the following: heavy oil upgrading, high pressure hydro processing, sour gas treatment, saturated gas recovery, ethylene cracking, offsites/utilities

  • Experience across both operator and contractor environments
  • Understanding of modular design impacts

Capability

  • Strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Experience developing engineering standards and design philosophies
  • Ability to deliver practical, risk-based solutions in complex environments
