Project Design Engineer

We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established and growing engineering manufacturer based in Ipswich who are looking to add a Project Design Engineer to their team.  This is a varied and rewarding role that combines mechanical design, project management, customer liaison, and production planning. You'll be responsible for managing projects from initial enquiry through to manufacture and delivery, working closely with customers, suppliers, and the production team to ensure successful project outcomes.

This position would suit an engineer who enjoys both technical design work and being hands-on within a manufacturing environment.

Main Responsibilities

  • Managing engineering projects from order through to completion
  • Liaising directly with customers to understand requirements and provide technical support
  • Conducting customer site visits where required
  • Designing specialist engineered systems using SolidWorks and AutoCAD
  • Producing detailed engineering drawings for manufacture and assembly
  • Creating and maintaining Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Updating and managing information within the company's MRP/ERP system
  • Planning and scheduling work for the production team
  • Coordinating activities between engineering, purchasing, fabrication, and production departments
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the business
  • Assisting with practical engineering problem-solving on the shop floor
  • Ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to customer requirements

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience as a Project Engineer, Design Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, or similar
  • HNC, HND, or Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD
  • Experience working within bespoke engineering, fabrication, machinery, or specialist manufacturing environments
  • Excellent project management and organisational skills
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with customers and colleagues
  • A practical, hands-on engineering approach
  • Full UK driving licence preferred due to occasional customer site visits
