Project Manager

The successful candidate will lead projects from initiation through to completion, ensuring delivery against agreed objectives while managing resources, risks, budgets and stakeholder expectations.
This role will be responsible for supporting the IHSS portfolio, ensuring IHSS, COMPASS and HICOMS remain aligned to agreed schedules, commitments and delivery milestones. The position will report into the Boeing Lead for IHSS.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain detailed project plans, including timelines, milestones and resource allocation, in alignment with subcontracted Project Controllers.
- Monitor and control project budgets, ensuring efficient use of funds and compliance with financial constraints.
- Identify, record and manage risks and issues, while developing mitigation strategies and capturing opportunities where appropriate.
- Support technical teams, including Principal Investigators and engineers, to ensure technical outcomes, research activity and deliverables meet the required standards.
- Track technical progress, including checking with engineers on the status of RL gates and key transition points.
- Coordinate procurement activity in collaboration with technical leads, supply chain, business support specialists and wider stakeholders.
- Lead the project team, ensuring effective communication and collaboration across internal teams and external partners.
- Maintain project documentation, including reports, meeting minutes, change logs and progress updates.
- Lead reporting activity across the consortium, ensuring reports are delivered on time and to the required standard, quality and format.
- Work closely with the Boeing Point of Contact to communicate relevant information in line with agreed scope and budget requirements.
- Escalate issues to leadership in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Coordinate with HICOMS projects to ensure plans are delivered within agreed timelines and specifications.
- Lead project management meetings with partners at both consortium level and through one-to-one meetings.
- Meet regularly with the Boeing Lead to align on finances, milestones and execution metrics.
- Provide relevant project updates, financial data and delivery information to the Portfolio Lead as required.
Accountability
- Accountable for successful project delivery, including achievement of agreed objectives, timelines and budget.
- Accountable for the quality and timeliness of reporting to UK Government and other key stakeholders.
- Responsible for team performance, engagement and compliance with applicable regulations, ethics and corporate policies.
- Ensure compliance with UK documentation standards, Boeing Start Right / Continuous Right, Quads & ProMPT, GTC and other relevant processes.
- Make decisions regarding resource allocation and team management for assigned projects.
- Integrate all project partners into the agreed project plan, objectives and delivery requirements.
Authority
- Act as project owner for assigned projects, including IHSS where applicable.
- Allocate resources and manage budgets within the agreed project scope.
- Make team management decisions to support delivery.
- Resolve team or stakeholder conflicts while maintaining project integrity and momentum.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Engineering, Project Management, Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Certified Project Manager qualification preferred, such as PMP or Prince2 Practitioner.
- Minimum of 5 years' project management experience within R&D, engineering or research programme environments.
- Demonstrable experience managing government-funded projects.
- Experience delivering formal reporting to government stakeholders, particularly ATI and IUK.
- Experience working within a portfolio environment and coordinating multiple projects to achieve strategic outcomes.
- Experience communicating project status to senior leadership through clear written communication.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong planning and financial management skills, including budgeting and cost control.
- Strong risk and issue management experience, with the ability to implement effective mitigation strategies.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to support technical teams and translate technical progress into project deliverables, milestones and gate approvals.
- Strong procurement coordination experience, with an understanding of contracting and purchasing processes.
- Strong team leadership skills, including team motivation, performance management and conflict resolution.
- Familiarity with relevant compliance, ethics and documentation standards, including UK requirements and Boeing policies.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working with UK Government departments or international government stakeholders.
- Previous experience within aerospace, defence or complex technical R&D programmes.
- Security clearance, or the ability to obtain security clearance where required.
