SEN Teacher / Outdoor Educator (Floating Classroom)
Tradewind Recruitment
Location: Burnley & Lancashire Waterways (On-site / Narrowboat)
Job Type: Full-time / Permanent
Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience)
About the Role
We are recruiting on behalf of an innovative specialist education provider that believes classrooms don't have to be boring, soulless rooms. They can be calm, creative, practical, outdoors, and even on the water.
We have a brilliant opportunity for a truly unique educator to join a dedicated team on a floating classroom-a specialist narrowboat designed to deliver personalised, alternative education. If you are looking to step away from traditional mainstream settings and want to make a genuine impact where it matters most, this is the role for you.
The Environment & Pupils
This role focuses entirely on supporting vulnerable young people with high levels of anxiety, Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA), and diverse SEND or SEMH needs. These pupils thrive in calm, low-stimulation environments. Before any academic learning can take place, they require trust, consistency, and a profound sense of emotional safety. This setting is designed to meet them exactly where they are.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver a highly personalised, creative curriculum that values individual progress over a "one-size-fits-all" approach.
Create and maintain a compassionate, low-stimulation learning space onboard the narrowboat.
Manage and support pupils dealing with complex social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges and school anxiety.
Help pupils rebuild their confidence, self-esteem, and successfully re-engage with education.
Utilise the unique outdoor and waterway environment (as seen in image.png) to deliver practical, engaging learning experiences.
What We Are Looking For
The Right Mindset: Someone compassionate, highly adaptable, and creative who believes education can look and feel entirely different.
Expertise: A strong understanding of anxiety, EBSA, SEND, or SEMH needs.
Desirable Experience: Prior experience working with narrowboats, inland waterways, or outdoor alternative provisions is a massive advantage, though not strictly mandatory if you have the right transferable skills.
