Salary - Circa £40,000

Hybrid - 3 days in the office


PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Lawes Consulting Group are working with a well-established insurance business seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter to join their NUH team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a technically strong and commercially minded underwriter to achieve income and profit objectives through the delivery of an efficient case underwriting service to brokers. An essential part of the role is acting as a key referral point for less experienced underwriters, assisting with the training and development of the wider team.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with members of the management team to ensure cases are managed effectively and that resource is sufficient.
  • Maintain good oversight of product retention, rate and underwriting strategies, reporting on key areas when required.
  • Manage own cases (renewal and new business), writing within risk selection, appetite, and underwriting authority.
  • Undertake referral cases above the authority levels of Underwriters, Trainee Underwriters and Apprentices, whilst adhering to individual authority level.
  • Adopt and adhere to company and NUH-prescribed processes, best practice and standard work.
  • Support the personal development of underwriting staff by delivering training and technical guidance.
  • Enhance the company's national standing and presence by establishing and maintaining strong personal relationships with key directors and staff at the most important brokers.
  • Contribute to the technical knowledge of the business by feeding back technical and commercial market intelligence to the NUH Underwriting Manager and wider team.
  • Maintain and enhance personal knowledge of relevant technical issues.
  • Work collaboratively with other parts of the organisation, including regional offices, claims and survey teams.
  • Conduct regular case reviews to ensure technical procedures and standards are always followed.


EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in underwriting.
  • Proven broker account development and management experience.
  • Proven track record of successfully developing and maintaining effective trading relationships.
  • Experience working across functions and matrix organisations to collaborate and build strong relationships.
  • Consistently achieving goals and objectives within a structured, organised and planned manner.


SKILLS

  • Strong risk perception and ability to price risk accordingly.
  • Effective negotiation skills — flexible and appropriate in approach.
  • Confident selling and trading skills.
  • Strong organisational skills with operational effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Clear and effective communication, both written and verbal.


EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Cert CII required.
  • Dip CII, or active progress towards, is preferred.
