URENCO UK Ltd

Help us to make a world of difference

Urenco is a global leader in the production of low carbon energy. We work at the cutting edge of the transition to a sustainable, net zero world.

We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to support the Director of Engineering and the Heads of Design Authority and Design Engineering in delivering departmental strategy and objectives.

Based at our Capenhurst site, you will play a key leadership role within the Engineering & Design Authority (EDA), driving engineering excellence, innovation, and governance across the organisation.

About the Function

UTD Engineering & Design Authority (EDA) is the global function responsible for:

  • Plant Design and Engineering delivery
  • Safety Basis of Design
  • Design Assurance and Governance
  • Engineering standards and best practice
  • Learning and Development

The function leads multidisciplinary teams of suitably qualified and experienced personnel (SQEP), delivering full plant design and engineering services across the Urenco fleet.

It also provides specialist engineering support to the COO organisation, including troubleshooting and debottlenecking activities to ensure assets operate as per design intent.

EDA is a key driver of innovation in plant design and engineering, developing new design concepts, processes, and systems. This includes leveraging lessons learned, market developments, and best available technologies to maintain Urenco’s competitive position. The function also defines and implements the Centre of Excellence for Design and Engineering.

Strategic Context

The EDA function plays a central role in Urenco’s recurring ‘W’ strategic planning process, enabling continuous review and refresh to address long-term challenges.

Aligned to the evolution of the Strategy 2020 pillars, the organisation is focused on five strategic building blocks:

  • Maintain a strong customer base
  • Defend and innovate the core business

  • Create a winning team

These support delivery across:

  • Long-term ambition (5–15 years)
  • Mid-term strategy (3–5 years)
  • Short-term priorities (12–24 months)

What you’ll do:

  • Support EDA senior management in managing the Special Projects department (25+ FTE), delivering Urenco’s CapEx portfolio from a design and engineering perspective
  • Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of highly qualified engineers, working with both internal teams and external contractors to deliver global engineering services
  • Contribute as a member of the EDA leadership team to develop and execute long-term strategy and short-term operational plans
  • Develop, implement, and maintain processes, procedures, and instructions to support plant design and engineering delivery (including QA systems)
  • Lead the development and delivery of Front End Engineering Design (FEED), including conceptual and basic design for capital programmes
  • Ensure all design projects are effectively planned, resourced, and compliant with current and future regulatory and legal requirements
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships across UTD and Site Operations to enable knowledge transfer and successful project delivery
  • Provide engineering support and expert advice for major and complex projects
  • Add value across the full asset lifecycle to ensure safe, consistent, and optimised plant design solutions aligned to business needs
  • Maintain and develop key design and technology expertise to create competitive advantage in critical business areas

What do you need to thrive in this role?

  • Extensive experience in engineering design within the nuclear or similarly regulated, high-hazard industry
  • Proven leadership of multidisciplinary engineering teams in complex, international environments
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks, safety requirements, and design governance
  • Ability to manage and influence senior stakeholders across technical and operational functions
  • Track record of delivering complex engineering programmes to time, cost, and quality expectations
  • Experience developing and executing departmental strategy aligned to business objectives
  • Financial acumen, including management of OPEX and CAPEX budgets
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with a focus on continuous improvement and building high-performing teams
