Senior Mechanical Engineer
A leading engineering organisation is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical and structural engineering activity across multiple concurrent projects. The role carries responsibility for technical delivery, engineering quality and team leadership, with involvement across the full design lifecycle from early concept through to installation and handover.
The role
Technical leadership and delivery
- Leading engineering activity across all design phases, from concept through to completion
- Developing and improving engineering methods, processes and documentation
- Taking ownership of complex or high‑value projects, including technically challenging or novel designs
- Resolving key technical issues using practical engineering judgement
- Completing and reviewing engineering calculations using hand calculations, spreadsheets, FEA and specialist software
- Assessing installation, integration and transport requirements to inform design decisions
- Managing design updates from red‑lines, inspections and FAT/SAT activity
- Supporting project delivery through technical input, site surveys and resolution of design queries
Production and project support
- Supporting production teams through design handover, build queries and inspection activity
- Assisting with internal and external FAT and inspection processes
- Providing ongoing support for legacy equipment and existing designs
Team leadership
- Allocating and managing engineering work packages across the team
- Reviewing and approving engineering output to ensure quality and consistency
- Planning and coordinating workload across multiple projects
- Mentoring and developing engineers at different levels
- Supporting recruitment and onboarding of new team members
Communication and collaboration
- Working closely with internal teams including production, project management and other engineering disciplines
- Acting as a technical point of contact with clients, suppliers and external stakeholders
- Leading project meetings and contributing to cross‑disciplinary reviews
Quality, safety and continuous improvement
- Ensuring all work is carried out in line with quality and safety requirements
- Driving continuous improvement in engineering standards and processes
- Maintaining awareness of new technologies and approaches relevant to the business
- Upholding professional engineering standards at all times
What you’ll need
- Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- Strong background in mechanical or structural engineering design
- Experience leading engineering activity across complex or multi‑phase projects
- Good working knowledge of engineering analysis tools, including FEA
- Confident reviewing calculations and technical output from others
- Ability to manage workload, priorities and technical risk across multiple projects
- Strong communication skills and ability to work across multidisciplinary teams
