An award‑winning civil engineering contractor delivering infrastructure, groundworks and associated building services across the UK. Established in 1995, they now operate from seven regional offices with a turnover approaching £250m.
This role is based in their Northampton office, supporting projects across the South Midlands. The company has a strong management team with many long‑serving employees who progressed internally from trainee level.
The Role – Senior Quantity Surveyor
Working as part of the commercial team, you will take responsibility for the commercial management of civil engineering and residential groundworks projects. This position suits someone confident leading commercial activities, managing multiple schemes and supporting junior team members where required.
Responsibilities
• Leading commercial management across assigned projects
• Regular site visits and liaison with the production team
• Preparing and reviewing tenders with estimators
• Providing early cost advice on variations and ensuring only authorised works proceed
• Offering technical advice on drawings and ensuring correct project documentation
• Managing end‑to‑end commercial processes to maximise value
• Working closely with Finance and Procurement
• Producing accurate cost reports, forecasts and commercial summaries
• Analysing rates and prices and agreeing variations or compensation events
• Identifying potential debt risks and negotiating financial reconciliation
• Forecasting monthly and annual profit figures and maintaining accurate commercial records
• Supporting the safety team in applying safety policy and addressing concerns
• Building strong client relationships and representing the business professionally
• Allocating work to subcontractors and overseeing procurement activities
The Right Person
• Experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor with civil engineering and residential groundworks experience
• Strong understanding of construction contractual terms
• Excellent Excel skills
• Strong mathematical ability
• Confident producing detailed commercial reports
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Able to manage multiple projects and support junior team members
