Walker & Sloan are working with an outstanding regional construction contractor to recruit a Sustainability Manager to support the continued growth and delivery of their South West construction portfolio.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking business with ambitious sustainability objectives and a strong pipeline of high-quality projects across the region.

Working closely with project teams, consultants, clients, and the wider sustainability function, you'll play a key role in embedding sustainability principles throughout the project lifecycle, helping drive environmental performance, carbon reduction, social value initiatives, and industry-leading sustainability standards.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence project outcomes from pre-construction through to completion, supporting both operational teams and senior leadership in delivering meaningful sustainability improvements across the business.

The Role

As Sustainability Manager, you will lead sustainability initiatives across a portfolio of construction projects throughout the South West, ensuring compliance with client requirements, planning obligations, and company sustainability objectives.

Working closely with project delivery, design, and pre-construction teams, you will provide technical guidance across key sustainability disciplines including BREEAM, embodied carbon, circular economy principles, social value delivery, and net zero strategies.

This is a highly visible role within the business and offers the opportunity to make a genuine impact on both project delivery and long-term sustainability performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading sustainability requirements across multiple construction projects
  • Managing BREEAM strategies, assessments, evidence collection, and project delivery
  • Supporting embodied carbon reduction initiatives, including Whole Life Carbon Assessments and Life Cycle Analysis processes
  • Advising project teams on sustainable design solutions, material selection, and resource efficiency
  • Supporting circular economy strategies and waste reduction initiatives
  • Driving social value delivery and reporting across projects and communities
  • Contributing to pre-construction activities, bid submissions, and tender strategies
  • Working closely with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and project teams to achieve sustainability objectives
  • Monitoring sustainability performance and producing project and business-level reporting
  • Supporting the ongoing development of sustainability best practice across the wider business

Candidate Profile

  • Previous experience within a Sustainability, Environmental, or ESG-focused role within the construction industry
  • Strong technical knowledge of BREEAM and embodied carbon assessment methodologies
  • Experience working closely with project delivery teams, consultants, and subcontractors
  • Excellent analytical, reporting, and communication skills
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management capabilities
  • Degree qualified within Geography, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related discipline

Desirable Experience

  • BREEAM AP or BREEAM Assessor accreditation
  • Experience using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software
  • Knowledge of PAS 2080, RICS Whole Life Carbon, UKGBC frameworks, and Net Zero Carbon Standards
  • Experience preparing Circular Economy Statements and Whole Life Carbon Assessments
  • Understanding of social value reporting and Employment & Skills Plans (ESP)
  • Previous involvement in tender submissions and pre-construction sustainability strategies
  • MSc qualification within a relevant environmental discipline
