Location: Great Western Hospital, Swindon
Contract: 3 months with strong potential for extension and temp to perm opportunities
Hours: 07.30am to 19.30pm on a 4 days on 4 days off rota
About the Role
We are looking for a dedicated Ward Host to deliver high quality, safe and compassionate food and beverage services to patients across hospital wards.
You will support meal ordering, meal service and hydration rounds, ensuring all patients receive the correct nutrition in line with dietary requirements and Trust standards. You will also help maintain a clean and hygienic ward environment for patients, staff and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Meal Ordering and Dietary Compliance
- Use a digital tablet system to take and submit patient meal orders
- Understand and apply dietary requirements, including allergies, texture modified diets and cultural or religious needs
- Check and follow dietary flags on the system to ensure safe and accurate meal allocation
- Support patients in choosing appropriate meals based on their needs and preferences
Meal and Beverage Service
- Prepare and serve lunch and supper meals in line with ward schedules
- Carry out and record a minimum of five hydration rounds per shift
- Ensure meals are presented well, served at the correct temperature and meet dietary requirements
- Maintain a clean and organised food trolley and pantry area at all times
Hygiene, Safety and Compliance
- Follow all food hygiene and safety procedures, including PPE, cleaning and safe food handling
- Record food temperatures, service times and allergen controls accurately
- Apply HACCP and COSHH principles in all daily tasks
- Report any concerns relating to food safety or hygiene immediately
Communication and Patient Care
- Communicate with patients in a respectful, caring and supportive manner
- Support patients who may be unwell, elderly or have communication difficulties
- Work closely with clinical teams to confirm dietary requirements
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
What We Are Looking For
Essential
- Experience in food service or patient catering
- Confident using digital devices such as tablets
- Good understanding of allergens, special diets and food safety
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to prioritise tasks in a busy environment
- Fluent English for safe communication
Desirable
- Experience in a hospital or healthcare setting
- Knowledge of hospital catering systems
- Understanding of texture modified diets
- Additional languages to support a diverse patient group
