Pay rate: Up to £350 PAYE or £475 Umbrella per day

Role Overview:

The Welding/NDT Field Engineer is responsible for quality surveillance of mechanical construction activities on a nuclear construction project, ensuring contractor works comply with approved technical requirements, specifications, and quality control plans. The role covers fabrication, installation, and assembly of piping systems, equipment, and supports within a nuclear environment. Working within the Site Quality Surveillance Team, the engineer provides independent verification of work quality, identifies and reports non-conformances, and ensures issues are managed through formal processes. The role requires close coordination with site teams and contractors to support safe, compliant, and high-quality delivery of works, while contributing to performance monitoring and continuous improvement.

Role information:

  • Perform on-site quality surveillance of mechanical construction activities in a nuclear environment
  • Verify works comply with drawings, specifications, ITPs, and Quality Control Plans
  • Inspect fabrication, installation, and assembly of piping systems, equipment, and supports
  • Identify, report, and track non-conformances and deviations
  • Review Quality Inspection Records prior to work being covered up
  • Monitor contractor performance and contribute to quality KPIs
  • Maintain accurate surveillance records and site diaries
  • Liaise with contractors and site teams to resolve quality issues
  • Support early identification and mitigation of potential quality risks
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and nuclear quality standards

Applicants should be able to demonstrate of the following skills/experience:

  • HNC/HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Welding, Materials, or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • CSWIP Welding Inspector (3.1 or equivalent)
  • Experience in welding inspection, mechanical construction, or quality surveillance on large industrial projects
  • Knowledge of fabrication, welding, NDT principles, and mechanical installation activities
  • Familiarity with relevant standards (e.g. BS EN, ASME, RCC-M) and quality systems (ITPs, QCPs, NCRs)
  • Experience working with quality documentation and reporting in construction environments
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify defects and non-conformances
  • Good communication and reporting skills within contractor-led site environments
  • Experience in nuclear or other highly regulated environments advantageous
