Mechanical Fitter

Wakefield | £17.20 per hour | Temporary to Permanent | Days

A precision engineering business in Wakefield is looking to bring in an experienced Mechanical Fitter, initially on a 12‑week temporary contract.

The role involves building and installing bespoke machinery, working to high quality and safety standards in both the workshop and, occasionally, at customer sites. At the end of the 12 weeks, there are three possible outcomes: the role converts to permanent, moves onto a rolling week‑to‑week contract, or ends if there’s not a long‑term fit. This would suit someone confident in mechanical assembly who is happy to prove themselves in a temp‑to‑perm environment.

What you’ll be doing

  • Assembling special purpose machinery from detailed engineering drawings
  • Fitting and installing equipment in the workshop and at customer sites when required
  • Using hand tools, lifting equipment and standard workshop machinery
  • Completing risk assessments and working in line with HSE requirements
  • Working directly with customer technical teams during installation phases
  • Contributing ideas to improve build processes and methods

What you’ll need

  • HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent hands‑on experience
  • Proven background in mechanical assembly or machinery build
  • Confident reading and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Good understanding of machine safety and safe systems of work
  • Comfortable working in customer‑facing environments when on site
  • Willingness to travel for installations when required
  • Experience with basic electrical or pneumatic systems would be an advantage, but is not essential.

What’s on offer

  • £17.20 per hour
  • Initial 12‑week temporary contract
  • Potential outcomes after 12 weeks: permanent role, rolling temporary contract, or contract end
  • Days: 08:00–16:30 Monday to Thursday / 08:00–15:15 Friday
  • Bonus scheme and company pension (if taken on permanently)
  • Training and development opportunities

This is a chance to get into a well‑regarded precision engineering business working on one‑off and low‑volume bespoke machinery, with long‑term potential for the right person.
