Air Freight Operator Overview

My client is recruiting for an experienced Air Freight Operator to join a well-established international freight forwarding company based in Slough. This is an excellent opportunity to become part of a busy operations team, managing air freight shipments from start to finish while delivering exceptional customer service.

The successful candidate will have experience handling either air imports, air exports, or both, and will be confident working in a fast-paced freight forwarding environment.

Air Freight Operator Responsibilities

  • Manage air freight import and export shipments from booking through to final delivery.
  • Arrange collections, airline bookings, customs clearance, and final delivery requirements.
  • Prepare and process all relevant shipping documentation, including Air Waybills (MAWB/HAWB), commercial invoices, packing lists, and customs documentation.
  • Complete customs declarations using CDS and ensure compliance with HMRC regulations.
  • Liaise daily with airlines, handling agents, overseas offices, hauliers, customs authorities, and customers.
  • Monitor shipment progress and provide customers with proactive updates throughout the transport process.
  • Resolve shipment delays, customs queries, and operational issues efficiently.
  • Obtain freight quotations and negotiate rates with airlines and suppliers where required.
  • Ensure all operational files are accurately completed and invoiced within agreed timescales.
  • Ensure compliance with company procedures, aviation security requirements, and industry regulations.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships through high levels of service and communication.

Air Freight Operator Requirements

  • Previous experience within Air Freight Forwarding is essential.
  • Experience handling Air Imports, Air Exports, or both.
  • Knowledge of international freight forwarding procedures
  • Experience completing customs entries using CDS
  • Understanding of Incoterms and international shipping documentation.
  • Experience using freight forwarding software such as CargoWise, Sequoia, CNS, ASM, Descartes, or similar.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise multiple shipments.
  • Dangerous Goods awareness (IATA).
  • Experience handling time-critical, pharmaceutical, aerospace, or AOG shipments.
