Applications Engineer in Birkenhead

We are seeking an Applications Engineer for a leading marine energy company based on Merseyside but operating globally to its maritime clients.  The company provides battery and hybrid energy solutions that are used across the maritime industry.  They offer products worldwide supported by remote and on-site monitoring to ensure a first-class customer service.

Applications Engineer - The Role
The role manages multiple concurrent customer projects and serves as the primary technical interface between customers and internal teams, ensuring customer requirements are translated into practical, reliable, and standardized system solutions.
In addition to engineering responsibilities, the Applications Engineer plays a key role in project commissioning, working closely with the Lead Commissioning Engineer to provide on-site technical leadership during installation, commissioning, testing, and customer acceptance.
What you will do

• This role requires frequent international travel to customer sites, shipyards, and project locations worldwide.  Travel is expected to account for approximately 100 days per year, supporting activities including Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), installation, commissioning, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), sea trials, customer acceptance, and technical support.
• Serve as the primary technical interface between customers and internal teams throughout the project lifecycle.
• Lead the technical execution of multiple concurrent Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects from project handover through commissioning, customer acceptance, and service handover.
• Review customer specifications, project requirements, and applicable standards to develop technically compliant and optimized system solutions.
• Develop and coordinate system concepts, layouts, interfaces, engineering deliverables, and technical documentation.
• Coordinate with Project Management, R&D, Production, Procurement, Installation, Commissioning, and Service teams to ensure successful project execution.
• Identify, track, and resolve technical issues throughout project execution in collaboration with internal engineering teams.
• Review engineering deliverables to ensure quality, functionality, manufacturability, serviceability, and compliance with applicable standards and company practices.
• Evaluate technical changes and assess their impact on cost, schedule, product standardization, and customer requirements.
• Plan, prepare, and support or lead Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), installation, commissioning, Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), sea trials, and final customer acceptance.
• Configure and commission Battery Management System (BMS) software and project-specific parameters, ensuring systems are installed and operate in accordance with the approved design.
• Provide technical leadership during on-site installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and system optimization, while supporting AYK Installation, Commissioning, and Service teams.
• Maintain accurate project documentation, technical records, commissioning reports, and customer correspondence.
• Plan and prioritize multiple concurrent projects to achieve project milestones while maintaining high engineering quality.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of products, engineering standards, processes, tools, and best practices.

Applications Engineer - The Candidate
Preferred experience

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related engineering discipline
• Experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), power systems, marine electrical systems, industrial automation, or similar technologies is preferred
• Experience with system commissioning, troubleshooting, or field engineering is highly desirable
• Good understanding of electrical system integration and engineering documentation
• Knowledge of marine classification society rules and international standards is an advantage
• Experience with engineering software such as AutoCAD or equivalent design tools is desirable
• Willingness and ability to travel internationally for approximately 100 days per year
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Applications Engineer - Benefits

• A starting salary of £60,000pa. 
• The salary is then increased as you progress through training to £62,500pa after 6 months and £65,000pa after 1 year
