Location: West London
Sector: Data Centre
Employer: General Contractor
Position: Assistant Design Manager

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Design Manager to join the project team delivering a major data centre project in West London on behalf of a leading general contractor.
Working closely with the Design Manager and wider project team, you will support the coordination and management of the design process from detailed design through construction and handover. This is an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Design Manager looking to develop their career within the fast-paced and highly technical data centre sector.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and internal project teams to ensure design information is coordinated, managed and delivered in line with the project programme and construction requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Design Manager in managing the design process throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate design information between consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and the site delivery team.
  • Assist with the review and tracking of design deliverables to ensure information is issued in accordance with the project programme.
  • Maintain design trackers, drawing registers, document registers and other project documentation.
  • Assist with managing technical queries, RFIs and design changes.
  • Review design information and identify potential coordination issues or gaps in information.
  • Support the coordination of architectural, structural, civil, mechanical and electrical design information.
  • Assist with ensuring design information is suitable for construction and aligned with project requirements.
  • Support the Design Manager with design meetings, workshops and coordination sessions.
  • Monitor actions arising from design meetings and ensure they are followed through to completion.
  • Assist with maintaining the design programme and highlighting potential delays or risks.
  • Support the management of design risks and opportunities.
  • Assist with ensuring project documentation complies with relevant Building Regulations, standards and project requirements.
  • Work closely with the commercial, procurement, construction and commissioning teams to ensure design information supports project delivery.
  • Assist with the management of the project's Common Data Environment (CDE).
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of project procedures and document-control processes.
  • Support the Design Manager during construction, commissioning and handover activities.

Experience Required
The ideal candidate will have experience working within a construction, engineering or design environment and will have a good understanding of how design information is developed, coordinated and delivered on major construction projects.
You should have:
  • Have a background in Engineering, Construction or design
  • A good understanding of the design deliverables and process
  • A good knowledge of construction documentation, and how to coordinate and deal with it effectively
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders, including consultants, contractors and site teams.
  • An understanding of multidisciplinary design coordination.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • The ability to manage multiple actions, deadlines and priorities within a fast-paced project environment.
  • Previous experience on large-scale construction, infrastructure, industrial, pharmaceutical, mission-critical or data centre projects would be advantageous.

Qualifications
  • Degree, or equivalent qualification in construction, design or engineering

What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is organised, proactive and technically minded, with the ambition to develop within design management.
You don't necessarily need extensive data centre experience. We would consider candidates from broader construction, engineering, industrial, pharmaceutical or other technically complex project environments who can demonstrate a strong understanding of design coordination and project delivery.
The role would suit an Assistant Design Manager, Design Coordinator, Design Engineer or technically focused Project Coordinator looking to take the next step in their career within a major data centre project.

Why Join the Project?
This is an opportunity to work on a major data centre development in West London, gaining valuable experience within the rapidly growing mission-critical sector and working alongside an experienced project and design management team.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their technical and commercial understanding while gaining exposure to the full design and construction lifecycle of a major data centre project.
