Assistant Farm Manager
Herefordshire
~ £31,500 - £35,200 pa, Permanent
“A great opportunity to build a career in animal care and agriculture – *with full training provided!”
Are you passionate about animal welfare, animal care, farming or agriculture, and looking for an opportunity to build a long-term career working with animals? You don't necessarily need previous poultry-farming experience.
We're recruiting an Assistant Farm Manager for a modern poultry farm in Herefordshire, and while previous livestock experience is desirable, it is not essential.
The employer provides comprehensive training, professional development and the opportunity to gain relevant poultry/agricultural qualifications as you develop within the role.
This could be an excellent opportunity for someone looking to transfer their existing animal-care or agricultural experience into poultry farming. Relevant backgrounds could include:
Animal care, animal welfare or animal husbandry
Agriculture or agricultural college qualifications
Previous experience working with livestock or other animals
Arable or other farming experience
Veterinary science or veterinary nursing
Zoology or other animal-related studies
Equine, stables or horse-care backgrounds
Kennels, catteries, zoos or other animal-care environments
Animal science or related college/university qualifications
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who genuinely cares about animal welfare, enjoys practical work, wants to learn and has the ambition to develop a career in modern agriculture.
The successful candidate will join a supportive, forward-thinking employer that invests in its people and provides the training and development needed to progress. The wider agricultural operation spans hundreds of farms, with animal welfare, training, technology and continuous improvement central to its approach.
The Role
Working closely with the Farm Manager, you'll help oversee the day-to-day running of the farm, with the welfare and performance of the birds at the heart of the role.
You'll receive training in all aspects of poultry production and farm management, with responsibilities including:
- Maintaining optimum environmental conditions for bird welfare and biosecurity
- Feeding, vaccinating and grading birds
- Monitoring livestock health, welfare and performance
- Ensuring the farm is maintained to the required standards
- Supervising staff and contractors, including Health & Safety
- Maintaining accurate records in line with legislation and company requirements
- Supporting effective cost control and efficient farm operations
- Maintaining high standards of animal welfare, hygiene and husbandry
- Supporting operations at other nearby farms when required
- Covering for the Farm Manager during periods of absence
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who has:
- A genuine passion for animal welfare, farming or agriculture
- An interest in developing a career working with poultry and livestock
- Previous experience, qualifications or a strong interest in animal care, animal husbandry, veterinary work, agriculture, livestock or another relevant environment
- A willingness to learn and undertake professional development and relevant poultry qualifications
- Good communication and people skills
- A self-motivated and responsible approach
- The ability to work independently and undertake practical/manual duties
- A full driving licence and your own transport, as travel between nearby farm sites may be required
You don't need to arrive with all the answers – we can teach you poultry farming. We're looking for the right person to develop.
Hours & Benefits
- ~£31,500 - £35,200 pa per annum
- ~07:30am – 16:00pm
- Average 5 days out of 7 across a 14-day period
- 28 days' holiday
- 5% employer pension contribution
- Life assurance
- Free on-site parking
- Full training and ongoing professional development
- Opportunity to work towards relevant poultry/agricultural qualifications
- Long-term career progression within a substantial agricultural business
*Important Biosecurity Requirement*
Because protecting the health and welfare of the flock is paramount, applicants must not keep or own avian pets, poultry or pigs. This is a strict biosecurity requirement designed to minimise the risk of introducing disease or other contaminants to the birds.
If you're passionate about animals and would like to turn that passion into a proper career in modern poultry farming, this could be an excellent opportunity to take the next step.
Please apply today – relevant experience is welcomed, but potential, attitude and a genuine passion for animal welfare matter just as much.
