Assistant Structural Engineer
Birmingham City Centre

If you're in the early stages of your career as a Structural Engineer and want somewhere that will genuinely invest in your development, this is an opportunity with a lot going for it.

A leading multidisciplinary Engineering Consultancy is looking for an Assistant Structural Engineer to join its growing Building Structures team in Birmingham following a number of secured project wins and a strong pipeline of work across the Midlands. The office is in an excellent city-centre location, just a few minutes' walk from Birmingham New Street Station, making it particularly accessible for anyone commuting into the city by train.

For someone building their career, however, the real attraction is the development on offer.

There is a major emphasis on CPD, technical training and professional development, with plenty of opportunities to learn both formally and through the Engineers around you. The business has experienced mentors and professional review assessors internally who can support Engineers at different stages of their journey towards chartership with either IStructE or ICE
.
Rather than simply telling you that chartership is supported, there are people within the business who understand exactly what you need to achieve and can help you build the experience and competencies required to get there.
The project exposure is equally varied.

You'll work across sectors including education, commercial, residential, transportation, defence and energy, with projects ranging from new-build developments through to refurbishment, surveys, structural assessments and work with existing buildings.

As part of a genuinely multidisciplinary environment, you'll also work alongside architects, Civil Engineers, MEP Engineers and other specialists, giving you exposure to much more than structural design in isolation and helping you understand how larger projects come together. You'll be supported by experienced Senior and Chartered Engineers while gradually taking on greater technical responsibility as you develop.

Your work will include structural analysis and design in steel and concrete, producing calculations to Eurocodes and British Standards, assisting with foundation design, preparing specifications and technical reports and working alongside Technicians to produce structural information.

You'll also have opportunities to attend site, assist with inspections and structural surveys, and gain experience assessing existing buildings - giving you a useful balance between design work and seeing structures first-hand.

Digital engineering is an important part of the team's approach, with opportunities to develop your experience using AutoCAD, Revit and Tekla Structural Designer, alongside wider structural analysis and BIM tools.

They are ideally looking for someone with:

  • A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, ideally 2:1 or above.
  • Some post-graduate experience within building structures.
  • Exposure to steel and concrete design.
  • An understanding of Eurocodes and British Standards.
  • Some experience of foundation design.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis software and BIM.
  • A genuine desire to develop technically and progress towards chartership.

You don't need to be the finished article - this is an opportunity for an early-career Structural Engineer who has gained their initial industry experience and now wants to join a larger, well-established environment where training, CPD and professional development are genuinely part of the package.

Add in hybrid working, an exceptionally convenient Birmingham city-centre office, a broad variety of projects and a clear route towards professional qualification, and it's a strong next step for someone serious about developing their career in Building Structures.
