Behaviour Mentor – Lewisham – PRU – Immediate Start – Long Term Role

Education First is recruiting an experienced and resilient Behaviour Mentor to join a specialist PRU in Lewisham, starting ASAP!

The successful Behaviour Mentor will provide dedicated support to young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, helping students manage their behaviour, regulate their emotions and re-engage positively with education.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Behaviour Mentor, SEN Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Youth Worker or Support Worker looking for a long-term position within a specialist PRU and alternative provision environment.

The School

This specialist PRU in Lewisham supports young people who may have experienced difficulties within mainstream education, including students with SEMH, challenging behaviour, ADHD, ASD, anxiety, emotional regulation difficulties and barriers to learning.

The PRU provides a structured, supportive and nurturing environment, with a strong focus on positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing, re-engagement, resilience and improving students' attitude towards education. Staff work closely with students to build positive relationships, understand the reasons behind their behaviour and help them overcome the barriers that may be preventing them from achieving their potential.

The setting provides a more individualised approach to education, helping students develop the confidence, social skills, independence and behaviours needed to successfully progress into their next stage of education, training or employment.

The Role – Behaviour Mentor

As a Behaviour Mentor working within the PRU, you will:

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support to students both inside and outside the classroom
  • Support students with SEMH, ASD, ADHD and challenging behaviour
  • Support students with emotional regulation and behavioural difficulties and develop positive behaviour strategies
  • Help students re-engage with learning and overcome barriers to education
  • Build positive, trusting and consistent relationships with students
  • Encourage students to develop confidence, resilience and independence
  • Use appropriate de-escalation and behaviour management techniques
  • Support students during challenging or dysregulated situations
  • Help students remain engaged with lessons and access their learning
  • Provide support during breaks, lunch and less structured periods
  • Follow individual behaviour, learning and support plans
  • Work closely with teachers and the wider pastoral and SEN team

What We're Looking For

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEN/SEND, SEMH or behavioural needs
  • Experience working with SEMH, ASD and ADHD
  • Experience within a PRU, alternative provision, SEMH school, SEN school or similar setting
  • Experience providing 1:1 behavioural, pastoral or emotional support
  • Experience supporting young people who have struggled within mainstream education would be advantageous
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
  • The ability to build positive and trusting relationships with students
  • A good understanding of safeguarding
  • Experience supporting students with complex needs, emotional regulation difficulties, anxiety, trauma or social and communication needs would also be advantageous
  • Physical Intervention or Team Teach Training would be highly desirable
