Are you an experienced Bookkeeper looking for a role where you can take ownership of the finance function and really make an impact?

We're working with a growing, well-established business in Gloucester that is looking for a confident and organised Head Bookkeeper / Company Accountant to join its friendly team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to become a key part of a successful SME, working closely with the Directors and taking responsibility for the day-to-day accounts, financial reporting and supporting the continued growth of the business.

The Role

You'll be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the finance function, with duties including:

• Managing day-to-day bookkeeping using Xero
• Processing sales and purchase invoices, expenses and bank reconciliations
• Managing CIS returns, subcontractor payments and deductions
• Preparing VAT returns, including domestic reverse charge
• Producing monthly management accounts, P&L reports and cash flow summaries
• Monitoring aged debtors, creditors and payment schedules
• Managing project costs, retentions and contract profitability
• Processing payroll journals and supporting payroll activities
• Preparing financial information and reports for the Directors
• Maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring HMRC compliance

About You

We're looking for someone who is confident managing a busy accounts function and enjoys having responsibility for their own workload.

Ideally, you'll have:

• Previous experience in a Bookkeeper, Senior Bookkeeper or Company Accountant role
• Strong working knowledge of Xero
• Experience with CIS and construction industry accounting
• Good understanding of VAT, including domestic reverse charge
• Experience preparing management accounts and financial reports
• Strong Excel skills and excellent attention to detail
• AAT Level 4 qualification or equivalent experience (desirable)
• A proactive, organised and hands-on approach

Experience within construction, property services, engineering or a similar project-based environment would be particularly beneficial.
