An exciting job opportunity has arisen for an experienced Bridge Inspector to come and join a busy client in the Blackpool area on a long term contract basis.

The main duties of the experienced Bridge Inspector are:

  • Carry out General, Special and Monitoring Inspections of highway structures, including:
  • Bridges
  • Retaining walls
  • Rural footbridges
  • High mast lighting columns
  • Identify, assess and record structural defects and condition information.
  • Access all areas of structures where required, including carrying survey equipment on site.
  • Input and retrieve information using highway asset management systems and databases.
  • Assist with the management of the General Inspection programme.
  • Support the development of capital and reactive maintenance programmes.
  • Contribute to asset management plans and policies for the maintenance and renewal of highway infrastructure.
  • Liaise with clients, design teams, structure owners and external organisations regarding highway structures.
  • Work with organisations such as Network Rail, National Highways, English Heritage and Canal & River Trust where required.
  • Undertake on-site supervision of contractors and statutory undertakers.
  • Ensure works are carried out in accordance with relevant standards, specifications and procedures.
  • Assist with resolving queries relating to bridge ownership and maintenance.
  • Manage and respond to correspondence relating to highway structures.
  • Work independently on site, including lone working where required.
  • Maintain accurate records and work effectively to deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Undertake relevant professional development and training.


We are looking for someone with experience in:

  • BICS Lantra Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme or an equivalent ADEPT-approved qualification, or relevant technical training and experience.
  • A relevant vocational qualification or substantial practical experience in a related technical discipline.
  • Experience within civil engineering, construction, surveying, buildings or a similar environment.
  • Practical experience of highway structures inspection and/or asset management.
  • Knowledge of relevant highway bridge inspection standards, guidance and procedures, including:
  • oInspection Manual for Highway Structures
  • oWell-Managed Highway Infrastructure
  • oCS450
  • Experience using specialist IT systems, databases and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to use basic survey equipment.
  • CSCS card.
  • Personal Track Safety (PTS) certificate.
  • Recognised First Aid certificate.
  • Confined Space certification.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workloads.
  • Confidence working independently and following lone-working procedures.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to liaise professionally with clients, contractors, members of the public and other stakeholders.
  • A proactive approach to professional development and continuous learning.
  • A full UK driving licence.


Key requirements for the role:

  • The role involves regular outdoor and site-based work, including accessing highway structures and carrying inspection equipment.
  • A reasonable level of physical fitness is therefore required.
  • You must be comfortable working independently on site.
  • A full driving licence is essential, with a suitable vehicle provided for work-related travel.
