Business Development Manager – Heavy Engineering & Fabrication / Nuclear
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Business Development Manager to join a long-established UK engineering business delivering major bespoke engineering and fabrication projects across some of the UK’s most demanding industries.
The business has extensive engineering and manufacturing capabilities and operates across sectors including nuclear, infrastructure, bridges, water and ports. Every opportunity is project-led, with typical project values of around £1m–£3m and sales cycles ranging from a few months through to major long-term programmes.
The Role
The primary focus will be developing relationships, identifying projects and generating new opportunities across the UK.
Responsibilities will include:
- Identifying and developing new project opportunities
- Building relationships with Tier 1 and Tier 2 contractors
- Developing relationships with project managers, commercial teams, procurement professionals and other key decision-makers
- Identifying projects at an early stage and positioning the business for future opportunities
- Generating qualified enquiries and maintaining a strong project pipeline
- Developing new customers as well as identifying further opportunities within existing client organisations
- Working closely with internal engineering, estimating and technical teams throughout the sales and bid process
- Remaining involved with opportunities from initial contact through to order
- Attending customer meetings, exhibitions and industry events when required
- Maintaining accurate CRM records and providing updates on opportunities and market activity
Once an order is secured, the project is handed across to the relevant delivery teams, allowing you to remain focused on developing future opportunities.
Who We're Looking For
We are interested in speaking with commercially driven people who understand project-led engineering sales and relationship development.
Experience within heavy engineering, heavy fabrication, nuclear, structural steel, specialist fabrication, infrastructure or similarly project-led engineering environments would be particularly relevant.

We are also open to candidates from estimating, proposals, commercial or technical backgrounds who have developed strong customer-facing and business development skills and are looking to move further into sales.
The successful candidate is likely to be:
- Proactive and confident identifying and opening new opportunities
- A strong relationship builder
- Comfortable developing projects over longer sales cycles
- Commercially aware and credible with senior stakeholders
- Positive and resilient when opportunities don't progress
- Comfortable working autonomously
- Confident using CRM systems, presentations and professional reporting
- Willing to challenge existing approaches and bring new ideas
Existing relationships with major contractors, nuclear, infrastructure or heavy engineering customers would be particularly attractive.
