Company Buyer (Building Bias)

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Company Buyer with a building/construction bias to support procurement activity across the business.

The successful candidate will be responsible for sourcing and purchasing construction and civil engineering materials, managing supplier relationships, evaluating quotations and ensuring materials are procured at the right price, quality and time.

You will work closely with site teams, suppliers and the wider procurement function to ensure projects are adequately supported and deliveries are coordinated with programme requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Purchase construction materials, goods and services, balancing cost, quality and delivery requirements.
  • Manage and support the Assistant Buyer, including delegation, guidance and training.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers.
  • Assess and evaluate suppliers and monitor ongoing performance.
  • Support supplier performance improvement and ensure agreed requirements are met.
  • Receive procurement requisitions from site and operational teams.
  • Extract relevant information from site teams to prepare accurate enquiries.
  • Prepare and issue enquiry packages for building and civil engineering materials.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience in a purchasing or procurement role.
  • Strong understanding of construction or building materials.
  • Experience dealing with suppliers and obtaining quotations.
  • Good analytical and numerical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Ability to process enquiries and correspondence efficiently.
  • Ability to obtain accurate information from site teams.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Commercial awareness with a focus on controlling expenditure.
  • Ability to manage multiple enquiries, orders and deadlines.
  • Good communication and negotiation skills.
  • A proactive approach with the ability to use initiative.
