Engineering Buyer

Location: Cambridge
Salary: Up to £48,000 DOE

Coates Recruitment is working with a well-established and growing engineering manufacturer looking to recruit an Engineering Buyer to join its procurement team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Buyer with a technical or engineering background who enjoys working closely with engineering, production and supply chain teams. You’ll play a key role in sourcing engineered components, negotiating with suppliers and ensuring materials are delivered on time to support manufacturing operations.

The successful candidate will join a business that designs and manufactures bespoke engineering equipment, offering a varied role with genuine responsibility, long-term career development and the opportunity to influence supplier performance and procurement strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Source and procure engineered components, raw materials, tooling and technical services
• Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and bills of materials (BOMs)
• Negotiate pricing, lead times and supplier agreements to achieve the best commercial outcome
• Build and manage strong supplier relationships, monitoring quality, delivery and performance
• Work closely with Engineering, Production and Quality teams to ensure technical requirements are met
• Maintain accurate purchasing data, supplier information and inventory records using ERP/MRP systems
• Identify opportunities for cost reduction, supplier optimisation and continuous improvement
• Resolve supply chain issues, shortages and supplier-related queries
• Support new product introduction by sourcing components for prototype and production builds

Suitable applicants are likely to have experience with:

• Engineering or technical procurement within a manufacturing environment
• Purchasing engineered components and materials
• Reading engineering drawings and bills of materials
• Supplier negotiation and relationship management
• ERP/MRP systems and procurement software
• Strong commercial awareness and cost control
• Working collaboratively with engineering and production teams
• CIPS qualification or Engineering qualification (advantageous but not essential)
