C++ Software Engineer – Robotics & Control Systems
Portsmouth | £60,000–£65,000 | Permanent | Hybrid – 4 days onsite
Interested in developing software that doesn't just run on a screen, but actually controls and interacts with complex robotic systems?
We're working with an established international engineering organisation that is expanding its software team responsible for a range of advanced underwater robotic platforms.
This is a hands-on software engineering role with modern C++ at its core, developing the software used to control, operate and monitor sophisticated robotic systems. You'll work close to the hardware, collaborating with engineers across software, electronics and systems to turn complex engineering requirements into reliable, real-world products.
The Role
- Develop and maintain software for complex robotic and autonomous platforms
- Write high-quality, maintainable C++ for engineering applications
- Build software used to control, configure and monitor physical systems
- Integrate software with hardware, sensors and other system components
- Develop interfaces between different parts of the wider robotic system
- Work with networked and real-time data
- Debug and resolve problems across the software/hardware boundary
- Support integration, testing and deployment onto real engineering platforms
What We're Looking For
- Strong commercial software development experience using C++
- Experience developing software for physical products, equipment or complex engineered systems
- Good understanding of object-oriented software design and modern development practices
- Experience working with Linux and/or Windows
- Comfortable debugging complex software and integration problems
- Experience with networking, communications or distributed software would be useful
- An engineering, computer science or related technical degree, or equivalent industry experience
Experience within robotics would naturally be highly relevant, but we're also interested in C++ engineers from other technically complex environments such as marine technology, autonomous systems, aerospace, automotive, defence, industrial automation, instrumentation or other hardware-focused engineering sectors.
Package & Working Arrangement
- Salary up to £65,000, depending on experience
- Permanent position
- Hybrid working – typically 4 days onsite near Portsmouth / 1 day remote
- Opportunity to work on advanced underwater robotic systems
- Hands-on role spanning software, hardware and system integration
If you're a C++ Software Engineer who enjoys working close to the hardware and wants to see your software operating on real-world robotic systems, we'd be keen to hear from you.
