Carpentry Teacher – SEN College - Croydon - ASAP Start - Long Term

We are currently seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Carpentry Teacher to join a specialist SEN College in Croydon. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled vocational teacher or experienced carpenter to support secondary-aged students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in developing practical skills, confidence, independence, and future employability.

The successful candidate will deliver engaging theory and workshop-based lessons, supporting learners through practical assessments and helping them develop the technical knowledge, behaviours, and industry standards required within Carpentry and Joinery. A strong understanding of behaviour management is essential, as you will be working with students who may present a range of additional needs including Autism, ADHD, SEMH, and Moderate Learning Difficulties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging practical and theory-based teaching across Carpentry and Joinery programmes.
  • Plan lessons, schemes of work, and learning resources tailored to individual learner needs.
  • Support learners through practical assessments, tutorials, progress reviews, and target setting.
  • Create a safe, structured, and inclusive workshop environment that promotes positive learning behaviours.
  • Maintain high standards of workshop organisation, health and safety, and industry practice.
  • Differentiate learning activities to meet a range of SEND needs and abilities.
  • Carry out learner interviews, initial assessments, and ongoing progress monitoring.
  • Provide constructive feedback to support learner achievement and personal development.
  • Promote professional standards, employability skills, and safe working practices.
  • Support curriculum development, quality improvement initiatives, and internal quality assurance processes.
  • Liaise with support staff, parents/carers, and external professionals to ensure positive outcomes for learners.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching assistants and wider college staff to manage behaviour effectively and maximise engagement.

Essential Requirements

  • Level 3 qualification (or above) in Carpentry & Joinery or a related construction discipline.
  • Industry experience within Site Carpentry and/or Bench Joinery.
  • Experience teaching or training young people within education, apprenticeships, training, or workplace settings.
  • Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to build positive relationships with challenging learners.
  • Excellent workshop management, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements and current industry best practice.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.

Desirable Requirements

  • Teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, QTLS, AET, or equivalent) or willingness to work towards one.
  • Previous experience working within an SEN school, college, alternative provision, or specialist setting.
  • Knowledge of Autism, ADHD, SEMH, and other additional learning needs.
  • Experience supporting learners through vocational qualifications and practical assessments.
