Rate: £28.42 per hour (Umbrella)
Expleo is seeking a Chassis Dynamometer Test Engineer to support a leading automotive customer at the Advanced Propulsion Research Laboratory (APRL), based at the University of Warwick.This exciting opportunity offers hands-on involvement in the operation of a state-of-the-art Environmental Chassis Emissions Dynamometer facility, supporting a wide range of vehicle emissions, efficiency, and propulsion development programmes. Working within a collaborative team environment, you will engage directly with OEM engineers, academic partners, and third-party customers to deliver high-quality vehicle testing across conventional, hybrid, and electrified powertrains.
The successful candidate will take ownership of chassis dyno test activities from vehicle preparation and installation through to test execution, data quality verification, and post-test support, ensuring all work is completed safely, accurately, and to the highest engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute end-to-end chassis dynamometer testing activities in accordance with established laboratory procedures and customer requirements.
- Carry out vehicle inspection, check-in, preparation, and check-out activities to ensure vehicle readiness for testing.
- Verify vehicle condition, including fuel levels, tyre pressures, fluid levels, system status, and calibration readiness.
- Prepare and install vehicles onto the chassis dynamometer, ensuring correct vehicle positioning, wheel alignment, strapping, and roller engagement.
- Configure and validate instrumentation, sensors, thermocouples, emissions measurement equipment, and data acquisition systems prior to test execution.
- Conduct dynamometer test cycles in line with defined test schedules and drive cycle requirements.
- Monitor test conditions and support initial data quality assessments during and after testing.
- Maintain compliance with health, safety, environmental, and laboratory operating procedures.
- Support troubleshooting activities relating to test setups, instrumentation, and facility systems.
- Perform post-test activities, including vehicle de-instrumentation, removal from the dyno, and preparation of the facility for future testing.
- Collaborate with facility engineers and service providers to maintain operational readiness of the laboratory.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Degree, HNC, HND, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience within an automotive testing, development, laboratory, or engineering environment.
- Strong practical understanding of vehicle systems and powertrain operation.
- Excellent hands-on mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to follow detailed test procedures while maintaining high standards of accuracy and safety.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Desirable
- Experience operating chassis dynamometers or engine test facilities.
- Knowledge of vehicle emissions testing and propulsion system development.
- Experience with vehicle instrumentation, sensor installation, and data acquisition systems.
- Familiarity with AVL systems such as PUMA and CAMEO.
- Experience using ETAS INCA or similar calibration and measurement tools.
- Understanding of emissions measurement systems, including THC and CH₄ testing.
- Experience working with ICE, Hybrid, and Electric Vehicle technologies.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality systems, ISO standards, and H&S compliance requirements.
- Experience supporting fault finding and troubleshooting activities within test environments.
