We are seeking compassionate, resilient, and dedicated Waking Night Child Support Workers to support children and young people with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs within residential and supported living settings across the Durham area.



About the Role

As a Waking Night Child Support Worker, you will provide overnight care and support to children and young people, ensuring they feel safe, secure, and supported throughout the night. You will play a key role in maintaining a positive and nurturing environment, helping young people develop confidence, independence, and emotional wellbeing.



Key Responsibilities

  • Providing high-quality, child-centred support during waking night shifts
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with children and young people
  • Supporting children with SEND, autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and SEMH needs
  • Carrying out regular welfare checks and monitoring wellbeing throughout the night
  • Supporting with personal care and daily living tasks where required
  • Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviours using appropriate techniques and training
  • Recording observations, incidents, and safeguarding concerns accurately
  • Administering medication in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Completing housekeeping tasks to help maintain a safe and homely environment
  • Conducting thorough handovers with daytime staff teams


What We're Looking For

  • Experience working with children, young people, or vulnerable individuals
  • Knowledge or experience supporting children with SEND and SEMH needs is highly desirable
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection principles
  • Ability to work independently during night shifts
  • Flexible and reliable with a commitment to delivering high-quality care
