Could you turn real-world issues into compelling classroom learning and equip pupils to participate confidently in civic life?
A forward-thinking, welcoming secondary school is recruiting a committed Citizenship Teacher for its successful Humanities team. The post offers the chance to connect classroom learning with everyday life, strengthen pupils' reasoning and help them understand how individuals can contribute to contemporary society.
The school needs an imaginative practitioner who can make the subject relevant through lively teaching, balanced conversation and challenging themes, enabling learners to form considered views and participate with integrity.
What You'll Do
You will teach Citizenship at Key Stages 3 and 4, using purposeful learning to build the knowledge, judgement and practical capabilities pupils need after they leave school.
Key areas of responsibility:
- Designing and teaching purposeful lessons that capture pupils' interest.
- Covering civic and social themes such as Parliament, public institutions, justice, legal systems, political participation, rights, identity, local communities and international challenges.
- Using structured debate and thoughtful dialogue to help pupils examine today's issues from different perspectives.
- Building learners' self-belief, perseverance, initiative and sense of responsibility towards others.
- Using assessment effectively to identify progress, respond to gaps and maintain ambitious outcomes.
- Establishing a respectful learning space in which every pupil can contribute and belong.
- Helping to shape schemes of work and extending learning beyond timetabled lessons.
- Embedding British Values while deepening pupils' awareness of fairness, difference and belonging.
- Creating practical experiences through forums, simulated voting, local action projects and themed campaigns.
- Partnering with staff across the school on shared priorities and pastoral support.
To thrive in this position, you should:
- Have QTS or a recognised equivalent.
- Be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline, for example Politics, Law, Sociology, History, Citizenship or another Humanities subject.
- Combine secure subject expertise with a clear commitment to high-quality civic education.
- Know how to motivate learners with varied starting points, needs and experiences.
- Communicate clearly and maintain a calm, productive classroom.
- Set high expectations and work to improve outcomes and ambitions for every pupil.
- Bring fresh ideas and energy to curriculum planning and classroom practice.
- Understand safeguarding duties and place pupils' welfare at the centre of their work.
- Take an active role in school life beyond the classroom.
In return, you can expect:
- A friendly setting where colleagues and pupils support one another.
- A close-knit Humanities team that plans and works together.
- Clear pathways for continuing professional learning and future advancement.
- Well-equipped learning spaces and up-to-date classroom materials.
- Practical support for staff wellbeing and sustainable working patterns.
- Scope to take ownership of clubs, pupil voice activities and partnerships with the wider community.
- An ethos that recognises creativity, belonging and success.
