We're recruiting on behalf of a growing and ambitious civils team in Cornwall who are looking for a hands-on leader to help drive projects forward. This role offers genuine long-term career prospects, with a strong opportunity to secure a permanent position for the right candidate.

What You'll Be Doing
As Chargehand, you'll play a key role in the day-to-day delivery of civil engineering and utility projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and motivating a team of up to 6 operatives
- Supervising civils activities including kerbing, drainage works, excavations, and hand-laid tarmac
- Coordinating labour, plant, materials, and site resources
- Delivering daily site briefings and maintaining accurate records
- Ensuring full compliance with RAMS and health & safety procedures
- Reading and interpreting utility drawings and construction plans
- Acting as the on-site point of contact for colleagues, clients, and members of the public
What We're Looking For
You'll be a practical, proactive leader who can get the best out of a team while maintaining high standards of workmanship and safety.
We're looking for someone with:
- Previous experience as a Civils Chargehand or in a similar supervisory role
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- A solid background across a range of civils and groundwork activities
- Ability to read and understand drawings and utility plans
- Experience using CAT & Genny equipment
- A positive, problem-solving approach and excellent communication skills
- Confidence working with the public and representing the business professionally
Essential Requirements
- Valid CSCS Card
- NRSWA Operative Qualification
- Full UK Driving Licence (LGV advantageous)
- Ability to securely park a company 3.5t vehicle at home
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- SSSTS
- Small plant operation experience (mini excavators, dumpers, rollers)
- Utility or infrastructure project experience
