Clinical Coder - Advert
Mendip Vale Medical Group — Sunnyside Surgery, Clevedon
Salary: £12.90 per hour (£26,832 FTE, based on a 40-hour week) Hours: 32 hours
About the role
We're looking for a methodical, detail-focused Clinical Coder to join our established coding team at Sunnyside Surgery. This is an administrative role rather than a clinical one; you won't be making clinical decisions, but the accuracy of your work directly supports patient safety, so it suits someone who takes real pride in getting the detail right.
You'll be working as part of a genuine team, not sitting alone with a queue of documents. New starters are paired with an experienced buddy so there's always one consistent person to go to with questions, and induction is structured to build your confidence gradually rather than expecting instant pace.
What you'll be doing
- Coding electronic and paper correspondence and results accurately and consistently, in line with the Practice Read Coding Protocol
- Using anatomical and physiological knowledge to apply the correct codes and link related information on a patient's record
- Inputting patient information into clinical systems
- Checking tasks and passing anything requiring clinical judgement on to the relevant clinician or pharmacy team
- Keeping all patient files and records to the required quality standards, in line with information governance, GDPR and DPA regulations
What we're looking for
Essential:
- GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above (or equivalent experience), with evidence of continued learning or personal development
- Experience working within an administration role
- A track record of accurate, careful data recording
- Good general IT skills, including Word, Excel, email and databases
- Able to prioritise and manage competing demands while meeting deadlines
- Tact and sensitivity, with the ability to build trust and confidence
- Strong communication skills across different levels
- Patient-focused, compassionate, resilient and flexible, with a genuine commitment to our values
Desirable:
- Administration experience within the NHS
- Experience with service improvement or clinical data
- Familiarity with GP clinical systems such as EMIS
- An understanding of medical terminology and basic anatomy and physiology
- Self-directed, calm under pressure, and a strong team player
Why join us
- A structured, supportive induction, with a dedicated buddy for your first months rather than being expected to pick things up alone
- Genuine progression routes, including into a coding lead role, other admin positions, Patient Services Manager, or training as a Healthcare Assistant
- A close-knit team environment with shared knowledge and support, rather than isolated desk-based work
- Clear boundaries around the role. Nothing here requires clinical judgement, so you'll always know when and where to pass something on
Mendip Vale Medical Group is committed to equality and diversity, and welcomes applications from all backgrounds.
