CNC Machine Shop Supervisor
Location: North Yorkshire
Salary: £47,000 – £53,000 + Overtime + Company Bonus
About the Role
We are recruiting for an experienced CNC Machine Shop Supervisor to join a leading heavy engineering manufacturer. This is an excellent opportunity to oversee a skilled machining team within a modern, well-invested facility producing high-value components for the Marine Defence, Subsea Energy and Nuclear sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Shop Floor Leadership: Lead, supervise and support a team of CNC machinists, setters, programmers and apprentices, ensuring safe and efficient daily operations.
- Production Planning: Coordinate workloads with Production Control, manage shift handovers and ensure jobs are delivered to customer deadlines.
- Technical Support: Provide hands-on assistance with complex machine setups, tooling, fixture alignment, prove-outs and G-code edits across a range of CNC controls.
- Health, Safety & Quality: Promote a strong safety culture, oversee heavy lifting and rigging operations using overhead gantry cranes, and ensure compliance with ISO 9001 quality standards.
- Continuous Improvement: Monitor productivity, resolve shop-floor issues, improve machining processes and support the ongoing development of apprentices and machinists.
Required Skills & Experience
- Time-served apprenticeship (NVQ Level 3 / ONC in Mechanical Engineering or Machining) or equivalent.
- Previous experience leading or supervising a CNC machine shop, or a Senior Team Leader/Chargehand ready to step into a supervisory role.
- Strong background in heavy engineering with experience operating or supervising Horizontal Boring Mills (HBMs) and/or Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs).
- Experience with Fanuc, Heidenhain, Siemens or Hartrol CNC control systems.
- Ability to read complex engineering drawings, interpret geometrical tolerances and make G-code edits where required.
- Competent in safe overhead gantry crane operations and heavy lifting procedures.
- Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to motivate and develop a skilled engineering team.
